Finding Hope At the beginning of this year we looked forward to our fifth annual Reasons to Love America issue; it’s always a moment of joy. As the moment approached, however, I wondered whether we should push on with our theme. America is in pain following the death of George Floyd and many others; we’ve lost loved ones to COVID-19; many are facing huge challenges due to the shutdown and unemployment rates not seen since the Great Depression. Nobody could have predicted that 2020 would bring us such difficult times. But then I thought about how this franchise got its start: It was 2015 and the country felt divided. The Bachelor franchise is implementing some big changes. On June 12, following the announcement that Matt James will be the show’s first black Bachelor in its 40 seasons on air, executive producers released a statement pledging to “do better.” “We acknowledge our responsibility for the lack of representation of people of color on our franchise,” the statement read in part. “We are taking positive steps to expand diversity in our cast, in our staff and most importantly in the relationships that we show on television.” The statement comes on the heels of a passionate call to action from former contestants and fans who have long expressed dismay over the lack of diversity on the franchise since it premiered with The Bachelor in 2002. “[The statement] is a step in the right…
