Ensure you have in-date fire extinguishers – look to fit an automatic extinguisher in the engine compartment, ideally a clean-agent type. Be aware that the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is launching guidelines on fire protection in engine rooms. Diesel heaters – must be correctly fitted and used. Batteries – be careful not to mix batteries of varying ages and, if changing the type of batteries, be sure to use the right charger for the type of batteries fitted. The blaze broke out at Conwy Marina around 0149 on 28 August, and 14 adults, three children and three dogs were evacuated from boats in the vicinity by RNLI Conwy’s inshore lifeboat. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent two crews from Llandudno plus a boat crew from Bangor. Coastguard and police also attended. No one was injured and the cause is not yet known.
