Practical Caravan March 2023

I’ve just been searching through my computer for something, and as I did so, I noticed some photos that I’d taken at the NEC show in February 2020. It’s quite strange to know now what we didn’t (fully) realise then - that the world, and our industry, was effectively about to shut down owing to Covid-19 restrictions. That enforced break has made me more determined than ever this year to get out and about and enjoy our caravanning freedom - it’s not something we should ever take for granted. One of the most northerly of the Dales, Swaledale truly is a quintessentially northern landscape, peppered with drystone walls and traditional field barns. Star Letter Lengthy debate In response to Amanda Grant’s letter (Do you speak Caravan? Issue 459), I believe we should add ‘length’ to her list of touring terms that require explanation. We have shipping length, body length, internal length and best of all, just length, which is not very helpful when reading on gov.UK that: The maximum length for a trailer towed by a vehicle weighing up to 3500kg is 7 metres. This length does not include the A-frame. Your Buyer’s Guide explains ‘Technical Terms’ very well, but there is nothing about the rules on length. It’s even more confusing when comparing information supplied by manufacturers, dealers and so on. Could you please explain the rules about caravan length and towing?
