welcome to the workshop

Well finally, after numerous false starts and changed plans, we can look forward to things. In particular the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery. It’s postponement from March to the weekend of June 11-13, 2021 will mean, barring further catastrophe, it will go ahead. An early summer festival at a time when we will all be coming back to life again, back to normality again, after the most extraordinary period in recent human history. I suppose the thing that has kept my chin up through all of this is the knowledge that we are all going through it together, and that our shared passion for old motors has been probably the best antidote to the mental strain everyone has been under. Visiting the PC workshop or going out…

tony pond’s tt-challenge vitesse rediscovered!

EXCLUSIVE A chance encounter while on location at Thruxton Race Circuit in Hampshire led PC to discover the whereabouts of the Rover Vitesse that famously lapped the 37.73-mile lsle of Man TT circuit at an average of 102.19mph on June 6,1990, driven by Tony Pond. It had hitherto been rumoured to have been scrapped. The aim of the TT Challenge was to drive a lap at an average speed of 1OOmph, something never before achieved in a car, to promote the Vitesse, Rover’s fastest model. Ex-rally and development driver Tony Pond, an island resident and four-time Manx Rally winner, made his first attempt on June 10,1988, but failed to reach the 1OOmph average by seven seconds due to poor weather conditions. Pond’s second attempt in 1990 was made without his со-driver, Rob Arthur,…

starting handle

The bringing forward of the ban on the sale of diesel and petrol cars to 2030 has been seen, by many, as the beginning of ‘the end’. I’m not so sure. Firstly, it’s only a ban on selling new cars, so the internal combustion engine is not going to disappear from our roads, just new car showrooms. Secondly, the development of low emissions engines and new fuels continues, brilliant engineers creating breakthroughs that could make the filthy extraction of lithium and cobalt for new batteries a thing of the past. That 2030 ‘ban’ might well ‘evolve’. Thirdly, as far as we are concerned, any ban on the sale of cars with petrol and diesel engines with potentially make all classic cars more important. Our cars will become a core element in…

new date for pc resto show

The 2021 Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery, will be held at the slightly later date of June 11-13 at Birmingham’s NEC. Show Director Lee Masters said: ‘With current government guidelines, we feel it is too much of a risk to go ahead with the usual March dates. In order to have the confidence to move the show forward, we feel a summer date is more appropriate.’ When the 2020 show was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new show element was already in the planning. The Practical Classics Classic World will bring the magazine to life over four key areas – Staff Car Sagas, Work in Progress, Barn Finds Revisited and the Classic World Stage with celebrity guests and expert advice – during the event. Projects Editor,…
