So, as the summer holiday season is upon on us, does it make sense for photographers to pack away the cameras and do something else during the break? panasonic unveils “ultimate stills camera”

With the hybrid GH5 being Panasonic’s best-selling Lumix G model in Australia, the company has launched a more photography-orientated derivative. The Lumix G9 is described as the “ultimate stills camera from Panasonic” and it’s built around an all-new weather-sealed magnesium alloy bodyshell which has bigger handgrip and a D-SLR-style monochrome read-out panel on its top deck. In addition to weather sealing, the bodyshell is insulated to allow operation in sub-zero temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. The 0.83x (35mm equivalent) OLED-type EVF is the largest yet in the mirrorless camera world and has a resolution of 3.68 megadots with a refresh rate of 120 fps to eliminate black-out. leica revives classic 90mm lens from 1935

It’s not just retro-style cameras that are popular at the moment, but also lenses, and nobody has a richer heritage to draw from here than Leica. The modern re-incarnation of the Thambar-M 90mm f2.2 follows Leica’s earlier resurrection of the Summaron-M 28mm f5.6. The original Thambar-M 90mm f2.2 prime was introduced in 1935 and was known for its soft-focus characteristics which have been retained in the new version. So has the classical optical design – four elements in three groups – although Leica says the glass elements have been single-coated to protect against environment factors which can cause surface corrosion (incidentally, a major problem with very old lenses). Also retained is a 20-blade diaphragm to give absolutely rounded and smooth out-of-focus effects, and it has stepless adjustment of apertures. The soft…

silver lining for leica’s q

Leica has announced a new edition of its Q, the fixed-lens RF-style camera which uses a full-35mm sensor. The Leica Q Silver has a top plate and baseplate with a silver anodised finish while the rear part of the bodyshell is painted black. The black leather trim from the serial production model has been retained while all the external controls on the top plate are in silver. Leica adds, “the design concept is complemented by engravings of the feet scale and the focal length numbers on the lens picked out in a shade of red that sets a colourful accent in the classic look of the camera”. sony a7r iii targets nikon’s d850

Nikon’s D850 has only enjoyed a short time in the sun as a full-35mm ILC which delivers both ultra-high resolution and high speed shooting before Sony has come along and spoiled the party with its new A7R III (model ILCE-7RM3). The third-gen A7R mirrorless camera retains its predecessor’s 43.6 megapixels (total) backside-illuminated (BSI) ‘Exmor R’ CMOS sensor, but there have been changes to the architecture and circuitry to improve both the signal-to-noise ratio and the dynamic range (claimed at 15 stops). An updated ‘Bionz X’ processor delivers significant increases in speed, in particular enabling continuous shooting at 10 fps with full AF/AE adjustment, and for a burst of up to 76 maximum quality JPEGs (or compressed RAWs) or 28 14-bit uncompressed RAW images. Accompanying the A7R III is yet another new FE mount lens, the 24-105mm f4.0 G OSS zoom. Weighing 663 grams, the new 24-105mm features a 17-element optical design which includes four aspherical types – two of which are ‘AA’ (advanced aspherical) types – and three ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements which collectively correct for both distortion and chromatic aberrations. This lens also utilises Sony’s original ‘Nano AR’ multi-coating to minimise flare and ghosting, and has built-in optical image stabilisation. The barrel is sealed against the intrusion of dust or water, and the exposed surface of the front element has a fluorine coating to help repel moisture and grease.
