sony’s video-centric a7s iii has 4k/120p and lots, lots more

Sony has stuck with big pixels for the third-generation video-orientated A7S series full-frame mirrorless camera. The A7S III has an all-new, backside illuminated Exmore R sensor with an effective resolution of 12.1 megapixels (12.9MP total), which means a dynamic range of 15+ stops and sensitivity that can be wound up to the equivalent of ISO 409,600. The camera’s newly developed Bionz XR processor – which Sony says is eight times more powerful than the Bionz X engine – enables 4K UHD recording internally at up to 100/120fps and with 10-bit 4:2:2 colour. For the first time on an Alpha-series mirrorless camera, the A7S III can output 4K RAW video (via an HDMI Type A connector) at 50/60fps with 16-bit colour sampling (and recorded using the full sensor width too). big things expected for sony’s smallest alpha full-frame camera yet

If you thought the standard Alpha series full-frame cameras were compact – and they are compared to any of the competition – just wait until you see the Alpha 7C (a.k.a. ILCE-A7C). It’s full frame – using the same sensor as the A7 III – with in-body image stabilisation, a fully adjustable monitor, and an extensive suite of both photo and video features all shoe-horned into a body similar in both size and weight to the APS-C format A6600. The key to the size reduction is a monocoque-type construction that combines the chassis and body into a single magnesium alloy component (and, incidentally, makes it easier to seal against the intrusion of moisture or dust). phase one adds 90mm lens to xt system

If you’re the proud owner of Phase One’s XT medium format field camera, then you’ll be interested in the addition of a 90mm f/5.6 Rodenstock lens to the system. The new XT Rodenstock 90mm f/5.6 HR Digaron-SW is the fifth lens in the system, joining the existing 23mm f/5.6, 32mm f/4.0, 50mm f/4.0 and 75mm f/5.6 models. Like all these lenses, the 90mm uses Phase One’s X-Shutter that was originally developed for its industrial and aerial cameras. It’s an electromagnetically-controlled leaf shutter with carbon-fibre blades, driven by a linear motor and has a speed range of 60 minutes to 1/1000 second. It’s extremely durable and has a claimed lifespan of 500,000 cycles. The new lens’ imaging circle is 120mm, which enables full use to be made of the XT body’s built-in movements…

fujifilm in a flash

Owners of Fujifilm’s X mount or G mount mirrorless cameras now have some new flash products to consider. The EF-60 is a new on-camera flash unit with a metric guide number of 60 (ISO 100), an auto zoom flash head – covering the angles-of-view of 24mm to 200mm (35mm equivalent) – and a white LED modelling light. The EF-60 also supports HSS (high-speed flash) sync, which uses a pulsed output to enable flash photography with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 second. It also allows for RF remote control and triggering using the Nissin Air System (NAS), so Fujifilm has also released the EF-W1 wireless commander unit. nikon z 5 adds affordability to full-frame mirrorless line

Nikon’s fourth Z mount mirrorless camera, the Z 5, becomes the entry-level full-frame format body. It’s selling for roughly $600 less than the Z 6, so it has polycarbonate back and bottom plates – rather than a full magnesium alloy construction – but it’s still weather sealed. The top panel info display on the two higher-end models has been re-placed by the traditional mode dial, but this is likely to be a plus for some po-tential buyers. The Z 5 doesn’t have the same full-frame format sensor as the Z 6 either, but it still delivers an effective resolution of 24.3 megapixels (versus the Z 6’s 24.5MP) with Nikon’s latest-generation Expeed 6 processor doing all the number-crunching.
