the value of volume

In the light of just how much photography has substantially changed in the last 20 to 30 years, what’s it all going to look like that far again into the future? I got thinking about this topic because I recently celebrated 35 years of writing about all things photographic and, boy, just about everything has changed since I started out. In fact, I’m not sure any other industry has been so comprehensively reshaped by technology, particularly over such a comparatively short space of time. From advertising and promotion through to how the product is delivered and the billing methods, everything is now universally done differently. Of course, photography has been continually evolving since the pioneering days of the mid-1800s, primarily in the quest for greater convenience and a higher success rate.…

fujifilm expands gf lens line

With deliveries of its GFX 50S mirrorless digital medium format camera now underway, Fujifilm is making good on its promise of additional lenses for the system before year’s end. The camera body launched with three GF mount lenses – two primes and a zoom – and these have been quickly followed up by the GF 23mm f4.0 R LM WR ultra-wide and the GF 110mm f2.0 R LM WR short telephoto. To match the GXF 50S body, both lenses are fully weatherised and can operate in subzero temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. Both also use linear autofocusing motors – with internal focusing – for faster and smoother operation. The 23mm lens – which has a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm – gives a 100-degree angle-of-view on the 44x33 mm sensor. It…

profoto b1 gets turbo-charged

Pioneer of TTL flash control in pro-level lighting equipment, Profoto has returned to the product which started it all – the B1 battery-powered Monobloc – and extensively updated it to create the B1X. The new version has a more powerful LED modelling lamp – now equivalent to a 130 watts halogen source – and higher capacity battery which delivers 50 percent more energy and an extended HSS flash power range. The new lithium-ion battery pack remains the same size and weight but can now deliver up to 325 full-power flashes (and obviously a lot more at lower outputs). The B1X retains a maximum flash power output of 500 joules with an adjustable range over nine stops, adjustable in 1/10-stop increments. This nine-stop range is now maintained when also shooting in the HSS…
