If you’re a member of the AIPP you’ll be well aware of the recent upheavals which saw the venerable institution heading for financial collapse. If you aren’t a member then, in a nutshell, the AIPP has recently been haemorrhaging both members and delegates signing up to events, resulting in a near-fatal loss of vital income. What’s gone wrong? Before we get to that, the background is that the Institute is essentially run by a Board Of Directors (who are volunteers, but under corporate law, are also, in legal terms, company directors) who then instruct a National Office which is run by paid staff, headed by an Executive Officer (appointed, it should be noted, by the Board). fujifilm launches hybrid x mount camera

Fujifilm is targeting film-makers as well as photographers with its new X-H1 X mount ‘APS-C’ mirrorless camera, which it’s describing as “the highest performing model in the X Series range”. The ‘H’ stands for hybrid. Similar in styling to the X-T2, the X-H1 has an all-new ruggedised and weather-sealed bodyshell that’s slightly larger and is made from magnesium alloy that’s 25 percent thicker and has a durable scratch-resistant costing. In ergonomic terms, the control layout is actually quite similar to the medium format GFX 50s, including a top panel readout screen and big lockable dials for setting shutter speeds and exposure compensation. The EVF has a resolution of 3.69 megadots and the 7.62 cm monitor screen features the same three-way tilting arrangement as on both the X-T2 and GFX 50S. It…

tamron details new fe mount zoom

While most of Tamron’s recently-launched new lenses have been for D-SLRs, the company has revealed it’s planning a 28-75mm f2.8 zoom for Sony’s FE mount, scheduled for mid-2018. The new Di III series lens (Tamron’s designation for lenses for full-35mm mirror-less cameras) employs a new autofocusing drive called ‘RXD’ which stands for Rapid eXtra-Silent Stepping Drive. Stepping motors are becoming more frequently used for auto-focusing systems because they’re not only very quiet, but provide the smoothness which is especially important when shooting video. The lens supports Sony’s ‘DMF’ (Direct Manual Focus) function which provides a full-time manual override of the autofocusing. According to Tamron’s preliminary specs, the zoom has a minimum focusing distance of 19 centimetres at 28mm and 39 centimetres at 75mm. It measures 117.8 mm and weighs in at…

sigma to offer art lenses in sony fe mount

It’s a sign of the growing importance of Sony’s FE mount full-35mm mirrorless camera system that many of the independent lenses makers are introducing compatible products. And it’s a significant boost for the system that Sigma has announced nine its much-awarded Art line lenses will be available in the FE mount soon. Sigma’s Art line lenses boast a very high level of quality – both physically and optically – which has seen them compared favourably with products from both Leica and Zeiss. Seven existing Art line primes – covering 14mm to 135mm – will be in the new FE mount line-up, plus the two new models that Sigma has just announced – the 70mm f2.8 DG Macro Art and the 105mm f1.4 DG HSM Art. samyang adds to xp lens line

South Korean lens maker Samyang has added a third lens to its XP line of high-performance primes for Canon EF mount full-35mm D-SLRs. The new XP 50mm f1.2 joins the existing XP 14mm f2.4 and XP 85mm f1.2. The XP lenses – the initials represent “Excellence In Performance – are claimed to have sufficient resolution for sensors of 50 megapixels or higher and for recording 8K video. The new 50mm f1.2 lens has an all-glass optical construction comprising 11 elements in eight groups of which two are special types – one aspherical to correct for distortion and one made from high refractive index glass to minimise chromatic aberrations. new f4.0 speed 70-210mm telezoom from tamron

For anybody who wants the traditional 70-210mm telezoom in a smaller, lighter and more affordable package, Tamron has just added an f4.0-speed version to its line-up of Di series lenses for full-35mm D-SLRs. The new 70-210mm f4.0 Di VC USD (Model A034) is around 175 mm in length and weighs it at a very manageable 850 grams. It has a weather-sealed external construction with a fluorine coating on the front element’s exposed surface to help better repel dust and grease. Hand-held shooting is further enhanced by the provision of Tamron’s ‘Vibration Compensation’ (VC) optical image stabilisation which is claimed to give up to four stops of correction for camera shake.
