We visit farmer and contractor Ollie Smith, who explains how he has refined his approach to direct drilling in Lincolnshire. While some folk appreciate the cold snap of a frosty winter morning, I'm certainly not one of them. The thought of frozen pipes from growing up on a dairy farm still sends a shiver down my spine… not to mention the risk of going bottom over top while carrying buckets of milk across an icy yard to the calf shed. All character-building stuff. As in the picture below, perhaps one day I'll manage a winter visit to New Zealand, to experience a second burst of summer and the sweet smell of freshly cut grass from the more pleasurable months in the stock farming calendar.
