And Cyril always had an uncanny knack of getting to news stories before anyone else—over the years I lost count of the number of stories that he broke on his internet blog. Yet this was actually Cyril’s third career, and, as with the blog, he had also excelled in the previous two. Born in Paris in 1949, he was running his own ad agency by his 30s, writing and directing ad campaigns for the likes of Volkwagen, Hertz and McDonalds and winning countless awards. But Cyril’s real passion was for America and all things American. Growing up watching movies and reading about Von Dutch and Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth in magazines, he loved the fact that building a custom car or motorcycle was a way of life in America, in the…

rocket cycle!

Bosch has fitted rockets to a motorcycle. Isn’t that really what we have all wanted to do?No, it’s not a prank and April Fools is long behind us. And, sadly, it’s not quite the Dan Dare sort of rocketcycle for which we first hoped. The system has fitted to a bike four cold gas generators working on argon/helium gas of the type normally used to inflate airbags. If a rider hits something slippery on the road, a jet of gas shoots out of the side of the bike; the effect is that the thrust from the jet pushes the bike back on line while also pushing the tyres into the road to recover traction. It’s still in the development stage (we’ll be a bit disappointed if the finished product requires the…

watch this

And so it was that Swiss watchmaker Bucherer partnered with custom firm, Bündnerbike, to deliver a new take on a Harley-Davidson Softail Slim S. The project apparently took a year to design and build and involved over 2500 hours of labour. The bike was stripped down and a new hardtail frame fabricated, along with a set of extra wire wheels. Then new bodywork was created. Now, even at this point—despite the fact that the look of the bike was already dated, that particular stylistic caravan passed by some years ago—all might not have been lost. But then the eight man crew from watchmakers Carl F Bucherer, jewellers Bucherer Fine Jewellery and Bündnerbike really got to work…There is, as you might imagine, gold plating. The rotating camshaft (which you can see through…

LASER TOOLS FUNNELIf you’ve ever attempted to get oil or coolant or brake fluid into your motorcycle, you will know that sometimes the result is liquid everywhere, which is never a good idea, particularly with brake fluid. The answer is this neat and cheap flexible narrow necked funnel from Laser Tools. Although really designed to gain access to gearbox oil fillers, it’s so versatile that you will find it ideal for any awkward filler, or even if your hands just aren’t that steady. Manufactured from chemical resistant polypropylene, the funnel features a cranked 240mm long spout that is flexible and narrow enough to get in (and under)anything that’s in the way. The handle lets you comfortably support the funnel as you pour in the fluid, and the cranked spout can be…
