COWBOYS ARTIST Jad Saber SOFTWARE Daz, Marvelous Designer, Blender, OctaneRender, Photoshop This cinematic piece allowed freelance concept artist Jad Saber to indulge his passion for framing and lighting, which he uses to enhance the mood, set narrative and tell the story. Discussing the details of his artistic process, he tells 3D World: “I posed the characters with Daz 3D and used Marvelous Designer to make the clothes. It usually helps to get the folds right, then put the texture that you want on the mesh.” Saber maintains that this method is often more efficient and accurate than using photos. “I also used World Creator to generate height maps,” he continues, “which I used as displacement in Octane to generate the canyon parts in the background.” Initially Saber found learning new software a difficult part of the process.…

It has a full feature set, for sculpting, painting and stamping, as well as a built-in camera and light system, making it ideal for rapid concept work and much more. QUILL Also from the Oculus camp, Quill feels more like a traditional painting app but is in fact full 3D. Artistic brush strokes live in 3D and can be fully animated. 3D artist Christopher Pavia spent two and a half hours creating his adorable image, Sore Loser. “This image was part of a project I undertook to create a 3D render every day for 365 days, inspired by daily render artists like Beeple and Fvckrender,” he tells 3D World. Pavia chose to create the character in MasterpieceVR, finding its lack of layers to be an oddly enjoyable constraint. “It led to more happy accidents in the exploration phase,” he adds. Sculpting took just an hour, with Pavia stamping out the basic form, then cutting out or adding to it. “My cartoony aesthetic works well with this process,” he explains. “For example, you can see that Sore Loser’s body is just a cone with the edges smoothed out, two more cones for fangs…
