epic selfies

Free flying is a fairly solitary pursuit much of the time, with each of us granted our own unique perspective on the world around us. Perhaps that’s why one style of shot dominates a lot of free-flying photography: the selfie. It’s simply the best way of saying, “I was here! Look at this! It’s amazing!” But gone are the days when you simply turned the camera back on yourself and hoped for the best. Now we have magnetic mounts in canopies, remote controls, hanging cameras that give you the perspective of an eagle riding on a pilot’s shoulder, and not forgetting of course the old ‘extendable pole and Photoshop’ trick. Edi Taschler Edi Taschler knows where he likes to be in January – escaping Italy’s winter in the warm climes of Kenya’s Kerio Valley. He led the charge there in what has now become the classic period to fly this escarpment. He flew four 200km triangles in four days there, starting on 12 January. After a rest day he returned on the 17th to fly a 259km triangle. He did another couple of 200km flights over the course of the next 10 days too. Edi is no stranger to Kenya. Nearly one-third of the pilots who flew in the Paragliding World Cup Superfinal in January were disqualified after it became clear they were on non-certified gliders. In a scandal that gripped the competition in Brazil, and then the wider paragliding world, mid-way through the comp Ozone’s competition paraglider, the Enzo 2, was shown to be markedly different from what was expected. The trailing edge was 40cm longer than the certified version – something that would make the glider go faster and potentially take it out of certification. All gliders in PWC events must be certified EN D. Ozone initially tried to brush off the trailing edge measurements as little more than rival manufacturers making noise. The Ion 3, Nova’s latest lower-end EN-B wing, has been much anticipated by their fans. Nova say it’s a wing that gives a lot in terms of performance, while demanding little from the pilot and being very safe and fun to fly. They say handling is precise but forgiving, and performance is half-a-glide-angle-point better than the Ion 2 (better than the Mentor 2, according to Nova). Tandem pilot jailed A tandem hang glider pilot in Canada has been jailed for five months and given three years probation after failing to clip-in his passenger, who then fell from the glider and died. William Jon Orders launched in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia, with a paying passenger, Mexican student Lenami Godinez-Avila, 28, on 28 April 2012. In February this year the court heard Orders failed to complete proper pre-flight checks before take-off. In flight Lenami hung from the glider for 90 seconds as Orders struggled to clip a karabiner to her harness. She fell 300m to her death. On landing, and panicking, Orders swallowed the memory card of his in-flight camera. He was held in a cell for several days until the recording could be retrieved. Outside the court Lenami’s…
