Maidenhair tree (GINKGO BILOBA) Extracted from the leaves of the maidenhair tree, ginkgo can be traced back to the ancient Chinese, who used the leaves and seeds for boosting internal energy and brainpower. Thought to originate over 200 million years ago, ginkgo biloba is recognised by its fan-like leaves. It is known to live as long as 1,000 years and is extremely hardy: some trees even survived the fall-out from the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima in Japan. The leaves of the tree contain a unique blend of active compounds including plant sterols (waxy substances) and organic acids, as well as being rich in bioflavonoids, which have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Beauty-boost bars These terrific omega-rich energy bars are a firm favourite in my family. They make the perfect onthe-go breakfast, midday energy boost or postsupper snack. I like to make a batch at the weekend and keep it in my fridge for the coming week. Makes 20 bars or 40 small squares 50g each dates, dried apricots, sunflower seeds 100g raisins 100g porridge oats 30g wheatgerm 25g medium oatmeal 20g linseeds 1 lemon, juice and grated zest 1 tbsp honey, preferably local 2 tbsp cold-pressed flax or rapeseed oil Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until they form a firm dough ball. Lightly oil a 20cm loaf tin (with flax or rapeseed oil) or one end of a rectangular baking dish. Press the dough into the pan to a thickness of about 2cm. Chill in the fridge for an…

Research shows that a regular brisk walk increases the capacity of the heart and lungs, lowers blood pressure and harmful blood fats, stabilises blood sugar and increases ‘good’ HDL cholesterol – all of which can lower our risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
