reclaim your confidence

Look kicked off our #GetReal confidence campaign back in 2017 so struck were we with the sheer numbers of young women suffering from low self-esteem. Fast-forward to 2018 and the surge of people – like us – who are reclaiming their everyday confidence (one hashtag at a time) is pretty awe-inspiring stuff. This spring, Look is picking up the baton once again, championing a fresh new breed of all-inclusive brands – all of them with confidence-boosting ideals at their core. And it’s something our cover star Amy Schumer (see p8) is keen to get behind, too… As producer to new film I Feel Pretty, Amy made her stance on body positivity in particular clear from the off. ‘I feel good about my body – I didn’t want one moment of myself retouched for this…

amy ‘i determine my own worth’

If Look was a school, we’d want Amy Schumer as our head girl. She’s the cool, funny sister we never had and, to be honest, our biggest girl crush. Her latest role? One that’s very close to home for the star. In I Feel Pretty (out 4 May), Amy plays Renee Bennett, a woman who longs to look like a supermodel until she hits her head and wakes up believing she is finally stunning, despite the viewer only seeing her as exactly the same woman. ‘There’s a message here that I wanted to send about confidence and where it should really come from,’ explains Amy, 36, at a screening of her new film. ‘And that is, don’t let anyone else tell you who you are or what you look like. You determine…

6 life lessons we learnt from i feel pretty

Try New Things Whether it’s going to a fitness class for the first time – much like Amy’s character Renee – or finally getting around to trying out a new hobby, breaking out of your comfort zone and opening yourself up to new experiences can have amazing consequences. You’ll learn more about who you are in the process, too. And you’re bound to gain confidence every time you branch out. Cherish Your Friendships They say nothing worth having is easy, and the same goes for even the strongest of friendships. With hectic schedules, best friends are often left on the back burner. Maybe it’s the comfort that you feel like you can always come back to them later, but it’s time to make them a priority. Set a weekly alert on your phone…

in defence of new mum kate…

‘Utterly unrealistic’, ‘sinister’, ‘unrelatable’ and ‘inauthentic’ – did you see these words banded about regarding the Duchess of Cambridge last week? There was as much coverage about how she looked post-birth as there was pre-royal baby excitement. How did Prince William look? No, we’re not sure either. Funnily enough, he’s hardly been mentioned. The focus wasn’t on the fifth in line to the throne (no matter how cute his little face is) but on Kate’s immediate fresh-faced appearance in that red Jenny Packham dress – opinions ranging from outrage that she dared look ‘perfect’ and pity that she had to put on a performance for the paps, to sadness that she wouldn’t step out without her blow-dry. But that’s just ridiculous. Totally, utterly ridiculous. Because this is not Kate, mum from down…

get in a row

One of our main style objectives is to be more Olsen. The sartorially-blessed twins have defined our wardrobes with their looks over the years – so it’s no wonder that, post-It Takes Two, Mary-Kate and Ashley decided to pour their innate fashion sense into two brands: the more accessible Elizabeth And James, and the high-end The Row. Today, we’re focussing on the latter – in particular, its Coco mules. Beloved by countless influencers of note, we’ve literally lost hours daydreaming about how they’d look on our own feet. However, at £725 a pair, they’ve always been out of reach. That was until River Island came along with its very own version of the cult footwear. Featuring the same contrasting bow and luxe suede finish, they’re a dead ringer for the…
