The Big Issue 21-10-19

The Big Issue is a UK-based street paper that supports the homeless, the vulnerably housed and those seeking to escape poverty. Vendors normally buy the magazine for £1.25 and sell to the public for £2.50. We are using Zinio digital editions to create additonal revenue opportunities to fund our street-based and pastoral care services for our vendors. We are a social enterprise company and all revenues go to support the vulnerable communities we serve. Our goal is to move our vendors away from dependency and towards full time employment

today for tomorrow

Last week we brought news of John Bird’s private member’s bill that aims to make sure that public bodies, including government departments and agencies, cut out short-termism so that policies aren’t left to the whim of individual ministers to create future-proofed measures that will work to dismantle poverty. The Well-being of Future Generations Bill was introduced in the Lords on Monday and will be steered through the House of Commons by Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, who guest-edited last week’s magazine. Here’s some of the reaction to the Future Generations Bill, and Lucas’s plan to rebuild democracy.…

A Lord’s view I’m a huge fan of John Bird. He makes a good contribution to the House of Lords and is always thinking about a better future. I agree with him. I think his founding The Big Issue is one of the best things that’s happened not just in publishing but also in putting homelessness and deprivation on the political agenda. I think his Bill will have a similar impact so I will be thoroughly behind him if I am in the House of Lords – if not then I will have to do it from the House of Commons. Lord Adonis, who is planning to give up his life peerage to run as an MP in the next election Look to the long term Short-termism in politics is at the root of…
