We are currently driving a very nice new T6 California, whilst ours is away for roof corrosion repairs (again, don’t even go there!). Some improvements over the T5 version, like the split hob / sink top, are good; others, like the pull out windscreen blinds, less so! It’s strange, I have actually discovered I have developed an affinity with my T5 and am missing it; though it will never come close to taking the place of the Split in my heart. However, the T6 model I have at the moment has that DSG 7 speed Autobox, and I simply love the effortless way it drives itself like a dream. But nothing beats the look of a classic bus…and we have some beauties for you again this month. Original paint and patina…

The van was originally bought by Dave Garnsworthy of Vanworx back in 1998, after it recently had been imported from California as an already fully restored custom bus. In keeping with the US Cal Look/street rod bus tradition, as well as a fresh new coat of Dove Blue paint, it had been fitted with a 4” narrowed beam, flipped drop spindles and a straight axle conversion at the rear. A new 1776cc engine had also been fitted, featuring twin IDF 40s, Engle 110 cam, 4 – 1 headers, deep sump, remote oil cooler and Pacet electric fuel pump. Most people will however be at least aware of the Slambassador name by now as their creations have been gracing show fields since Denis started the business a few years back. He created the Beetle powered T4, that was christened the B4 and resurrected a 1972 Bay from a burnt out shell that graced the cover of issue 120 of this very publication. Since then Denis has taken a grinder to it and turned it from a bus into a flatbed truck which is very useful for transporting the odd motorbike to events or for members of the Slambassador Social club to use as a makeshift seating area, he’s very thoughtful. Got a problem or a query? Steve Leatham has been working on and restoring VW buses since 1997, tackling just about every job over the years. He has been resident Bus Doctor for the mag since 2003. Year Of My T3? Dear Bus Doctor, My chassis number on my T3 (T25) camper is 5A0039112. I think it’s an earlier van, as it has the metal vents as well. It is registered as an 81 but think it may have been made earlier and then registered a bit later. I’m asking because I want to register it as historic to apply for the 40yrs from production tax and MOT exemptions. Blake That isn’t a VAG chassis number. From August ‘79 they were 17 digits.
