welcome

Email editor@volkswagencamper.co.uk Address Editor, VW Camper & Commercial, Jazz Publishing The Old School Higher Kinnerton Chester CH4 9AJ www.volkswagencamper.co.uk It’s been a hectic few weeks here, what with Lavenham, then Camper Jam followed immediately by ten days in Cornwall, and now I am getting ready to head off to Split Bus Nation in Belgium! (Glad we are going via Hull not Dover given the news as I write this!) And somehow a magazine to compile in between all this! It’s been a while since we have had a proper non VW holiday in the bus and it was refreshing to rediscover the simple joys of just camping and chilling instead of airports and hotels. We stayed at the Camping and Caravan site in Veryan near St Austell and did all the touristy things like…

go west

Justin recalls amazing memories of a summer touring UK in an orange Bay window as a child and he wanted the same happy family experiences for his two children, Harley (6) and Delilah (4). So, in 2014, when he saw a nice looking Split for sale just 10 miles away he enlisted the help of Jason at Volksweld to check it out. Ignoring the adage “don’t immediately buy the first bus you look at” Justin fell in love and suddenly found himself very skint but the proud owner of a Split. The bus seemed quite solid; areas such as the roof, rear quarters and bumpers clearly needed attention but the previous owner had carried out a lot of resto and a repaint and had fitted a bespoke wood interior. Another…

Kiravans Barndoor Awning No, not that kind of Barndoor (pre 55 Split), this refers to T4/5 buses that have twin opening cargo doors at the rear instead of a tailgate. Online retailer Kiravans has launched an ingenious way to add a bit of extra space to these campers with an awning designed specifically for these rear twin doors models. The Barn Door Sail is a unique three-piece, aluminium pole system that clips to a van door’s latches. There are no guy lines or pegs to trip over and it can go up anywhere. It is also totally waterproof and windproof with double stitched seams, and sheds rainwater towards the van’s water channels. The awning is available for the T5 with or without a spoiler, and the T4 with a spoiler; and comes with…

seating for seven

W Built in as a Deluxe Microbus in 1977, it was a seven seater walk through model, with a double middle seat. It had originally been finished in Reef Blue (L57H) and Pastel White and fitted with the 2 litre Type 4 engine. It also had the sliding steel sunroof option, which until 1974 had been standard on all Deluxe buses, as well as the standard Deluxe features of rubber inserts for the bumpers, dash clock, chrome front badge and window surround trim, vent windows for the cab doors and also for the sliding door and opposite side windows. Little is known about its history, though the front and rear side reflectors, padded dash and mph speedo would indicate it was originally a US export model. It had not been molested…

bus doctor

Steve Leatham & Simon Baxter answer some of your questions… Email info@volkswagencamper.co.uk Address Bus Doctor, VW Camper & Commercial, The Old School Higher Kinnerton Chester CH4 9AJ The Bus Doctor is sponsored by Mail order parts specialistswww.GermanCamperCompany.com Pick Up Cooling Vents Dear Bus Doctor, I’m in the process of restoring a ‘74 single cab bay pick up and I need to replace both the rear arches including the vent area. Are replacements are available? Or is it a case of scouring breakers? Maybe if someone can replicate the louvres in a panel that I can weld in to a generic bus arch? Marcus They are quite hard to track down but it’s worth looking at these links – they are for Early Bay panels but I’d also contact both Schofields and Hoffmans and ask for advice. http://en.hoffmann-speedster.com/special-offers/new-products/bus/bus-t2/11659/repairpanel-9-air-slots-pick-up?c=136663 http://www.alanhschofield.com/ourparts/prod_3998426-9-Vent-Louvre-Repair-Panel-6871-261809161A.html Which Front…
