welcome

The original and best VW bus magazine since 2000Email editor@volkswagencamper.co.uk Address Editor, VW Camper & Commercial, Jazz Publishing The Old School Higher Kinnerton Chester CH4 9AJAs you will read in Mike’s column on page 98, 2017 is a milestone in VW bus history as it marks 50 years since the introduction of the T2 Bay in 1967. To mark this I managed to dig out a picture of the 100th Bay window off the new production line on 1st August 1967. What is especially intriguing is that the 100th Bay built was a special model wide bed single cab Pick Up, featuring wooden sidegates as on the Westfalia Split special model. Check out those new design extended mirror arms! Herein lies a bus buffer’s conundrum – Westfalia’s wide bed pick…

special order splitty

There’s something about a full-size wooden steering wheel and note how the dash has been given a contemporary look through a clever choice of paint colourS teve’s first VW, a brand new delivery van on a ‘K’ plate, cost him £1,299 and was for business use, delivering the goodies from his flourishing bakery business to shops and markets in the Leeds area and beyond. Seven more workhorses followed, the second on an ‘M’ plate had crept up to £1,329. Each towed a trailer and worked hard for its living, sufficiently hard that they were kept for twelve to fourteen months and little more, but it wasn’t until 1988 or ’89 that the first diesel was bought. Inevitably, as the business spiralled upwards and deliveries mushroomed, capacity needs demanded a transition…

DubFreeze VW Show,WOW! What a VW show DubFreeze is. Beetles and campers everywhere. Records smashed. Saturday camping is becoming massive. Sunday attendance is massive. Club displays are impressive. The trade turnout is huge. And the Show and Shine is of the highest quality. There will be Autojumble a-plenty. The weather will be kind! It’s always going to be chilly in February, but there will be no ice and snow* And there is a bar on Saturday night which will be busy from opening until closing time. Last year everyone was so well behaved and a credit to the VW scene. Organisation was perfect – must give ourselves a little pat on the back. There is free parking at the show ground and admission to the event on Sunday (9am – 4pm)…

‘ich bin ein berliner’

A glimpse of the Berlin interior - comfort, luxury and practicality all in oneThe rear-hinged Pop-Top as fitted to all ‘74 and later Westfalia models (previously fronthinged)Apart from the swivel seat for the front passenger, note the accessory storage box/trash container between the seats and a glimpse of the other extra-cost option, the small removable tableP icture the scene. It’s January 2002, Trevor is faced with a 200-mile journey to move his ‘smelly and knocked about’ purchase from Warwickshire to the North East. He’d paid ‘an awful lot’, £6.5K to be precise. ‘The steering was loose and a strong wind blew me all over the road.’ Above all, he was ‘freezing cold’ and to think, ‘after years of sleeping under canvas I was looking for a bit more luxury as…

volksfling mk 2 2016

O n the agenda: snap a collection of buses not often seen south of the border, after rumours of shockingly expensive Campers at other shows, check the market, find something unusual on the showfield or in the car-park and... Locate a bus stunning enough to warrant its own feature. Achieved: absolutely everything, which made for a perfect day. Held over the August Bank Holiday weekend at Biggar in the Scottish Borders.Key to the Concours class covering Splits and Bays (and other air-cooled models of similar vintage) wasn’t stunning originality, but rather imaginative customising. First up was a rather tasty and exclusive bus of ‘67 vintage. The craftsmanship of the interior, the classy cab and an engine that boasts a bit more power than the 1500 of the day. ‘The Lowered’,…
