There’s nothing I love more (apart from getting out in the bus) than a good old fashioned puzzle involving digging round VW archives to unravel a story. And the Welcome image this month provided exactly that! This camping conversion, on a sunroof Microbus, was displayed at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1953. Some sources suggest it was built by VW, others by Westfalia, and it certainly does not look like any camper layout we know … so what is it? Turn to page 82 to find out the truth behind this mystery camper!Unravelling the story made me aware of how once something is in print (or on the web) it can be taken on and become part of the folklore and that even something incorrectly translated from German back in…

fire in the hold!

Keith has reproduced the racks to store hoses and equipment from original designs and drawingsThe TSF-T mobile pump vehicle was the base unit popular with local, voluntary fire services. Based on a Panel Van, it was designed to carry a crew, firefighting equipment, hoses and a VW industrial engine powered water pump. This particular example was built in August 1966 (so would have been a 67 Model Year with 12v electrics) and converted by Bachert Feuerwehrgerätefabrik. It features the sliding door option (M161) along with the usual M package for Fire Trucks: laminated windscreens, mud / snow tyres, heating outlet in the cargo bay, blue flashing light and twin Bosch sirens, external battery charging socket DIN 14 690, chrome hubcaps and red painted VW badge, along with an industrial VW…

the month ahead

5-7 May (extra nights are available) Warren Farm, Brean Sands, SomersetVanwest has all the ingredients required for a great VW show, but with a couple of extra things that no other show offers. There will of course be the expected mix of activities for the whole family to get involved in, from displays and demonstrations, to children’s entertainment and live music, plus a large variety of caterers and traders. But it doesn’t stop there as the organisers strive to add more, with things like a kite demonstration to try your hand at, and, tides permitting, the opportunity to experience Kite Buggying first hand on the beach. The campsite is located just over the road from Brean Sands and its miles and miles of unspoilt beach. Camping plots for club, family…

red hot

When this full on custom Bay hit the show field at Camper Jam last summer, it immediately drew the crowds, proudly sitting there with its Kandy paint gleaming in the sun and sporting a luxurious, comfy interior. Then you notice how low it is, then the way the cab doors open, then the absence of handles and seams and that’s before you have even checked the insides– no wonder it also drew the judges’ eyes and won a Top 5 award!MCJ rosewood steering wheel and a customised handbrake with a Snap On 3/8 drive stubby ratchet as the handleThe whole front panel has been smoothed, removing grill, badge and indicatorsCobra Carbon fibre Misano seats were chosen for the cab to accommodate the 17” wheels and the drop given by Rayvern…
