welcome

Are you one of those bus nerds (aka enthusiasts) who always spots a bus in a film or programme, annoying the rest of the family by suddenly shouting when you spot one? I was just re-watching Back to the Future with the grandson and I had completely forgotten that great car chase with terrorists in a purple bay chasing Marty and firing at him from the sunroof! But whilst spotting the bus is sometimes fun, (especially when it’s street scenes in 60s and 70s stuff) sometimes it’s really annoying! The other week I was watching Endeavour (yes, I know…), clearly set around 66/67. At one point up rolls an immaculate orange Bay microbus on screen… in 1967? Well possibly correct, but then I saw it was a Late Bay, the…

a work in progress

T Built in October 1972 it was one of the new style Bay models (aka Late Bay), immediately recognisable by the small front badge and high position front indicators. It left the factory for conversion by Devon, with just the underbelly reinforcing plates option as it was to have a pop top fitted. Originally finished in the classic 70’s Brilliant Orange / Pastel White colour scheme, the lower body was repainted in a version of Neptune Blue when it was restored by the last owner in the late 90’s. Nothing is known about its previous life until it was acquired in the late 90’s by Rob Hartnell. Rob carried out necessary rust repairs on the wheel arches, sills etc and then sprayed the lower body himself. The original Devon interior was…

news and products

In Memorium: Colin Mahon (1956-2018) VW Camper & Commercial reader, Colin Mahon was taken to Overdale Crematorium, Bolton, on Vintage Lorry Funerals 1950 Leyland Beaver on February 27th. Colin worked for John Charlton (Bolton) Ltd, fitting tipping equipment to HGVs and this was the reason why his family chose to use the Leyland Beaver. However, Colin’s passion was car restorations and each car restored was then sold to fund the next project. Memorable restorations included a Cortina Mark 1, a white Capri, a Buick which he had shipped over from America and a 500sl Mercedes Benz convertible for John Charlton, his boss, who allowed Colin to store and work on his cars undercover at weekends in the Bent Street Works. In July 2017 Colin bought a 1972 VW Camper from London and decided…

The Bus Stopover 15 – 17 June Newark Showground, Notts The Bus Stopover was established back in 2004 and in the early days was on a farmer’s field. Nowadays its home is the well-appointed Newark Showground, with hard standing, tarmac access roads, flushing toilets (no portaloos at BSO!) and even free hot showers but it has retained its grassroots origins, with the slogan Back to the Old Skool. Famous for its ‘all are welcome’ Sunday Shown Shine and wide range of traders, caterers, and kids’ entertainment with The Party Workshop, it also offers some really cool old-school show stuff such as the legendary BSO Bus Pull! As well as live bands, Cooking in a Camper, Wacky Races, Pedal Powered Cruises and The Bark in the Park Dog Show, new for 2018 is the…

the french connection

Built in August 1963, the Kombi (or Combi to the French) was fitted with options M178, rpm limiter for 1200cc engine and M397, which was the French market package with yellow headlamps, right rear view mirror and rear reflectors. Finished in Dove Blue it was sign written and used as a plumbing and heating engineer’s van, before being parked up around 25 – 30 years ago. Alistair Hinson had always wanted a Split, having owned numerous Beetles and a Bay, so when he spotted this for sale on the French EBay site he was immediately attracted to it, despite the skimpy info “Combi Split 1963” and only one photograph! It was located in the Burgundy Region of France in a town called Nevers, an hour and a half South of Paris…
