welcome

Given the appalling weather and sodden ground this Spring (someone needs to tell the weather it’s Spring not the Monsoon season) then maybe the half-track bulli conversion shown here is a more appropriate way to get off the showgrounds! This prototype tank track conversion was built in 1962 by the Raupen Fuchs company (literally: Caterpillar Fox) for winter use in Alpine areas to ferry tourists. It still exists, though no longer runs, and is in need of extensive restoration. Now for some really good news. VW Camper and Commercial is now officially the world’s biggest selling magazine devoted to classic VW buses; over the past six months our humble VW Camper magazine has outsold all of the leading rival VW titles. So we must be doing something right! As usual, this month…

unrestored and unmolested.

He has clocked up around 35 years of ownership with his Bay Window camper, that understandably has become very much part and parcel of his family. However, there’s no getting away from the fact, that for many enthusiasts, a splitscreen is the one that people have a desire to own, whether they admit it or not! While Steve thoroughly enjoyed owning his bay, the thought of split ownership has never quite gone away. Interestingly his 1967 T1 actually found him, rather than him going looking for it! This split was built on 14th June 1967, left the factory on 21st June and was imported into the UK via Ramsgate, Kent. It was painted in L555 Titian Red and L472 Beige Grey with Mesh Grey upholstery. It had only two previous owners…

let there be dragons!

Brandon Jones is unlikely ever to forget his first foray into the bay of E, where he bought a proper bay, a Volkswagen bay. This man has some bottle, since the panel van came with no tax, no MOT and other than it had had nine previous owners, no history. He didn’t even drive it, the bus was recovered on a flat bed and it, “Looked a bit of a mess, the headlining was ripped and it was a bit tatty inside”. It was fitted with just the cab seats. “I wasn’t really worried as I planned to refurbish it completely - well until the money ran out! “I had always wanted a VW and when my mum died and left me her property, some of the proceeds went towards the Volkswagen.…

bus doctor

Steve Leatham answers some of your questions… Email info@volkswagencamper.co.uk Address Bus Doctor, VW Camper & Commercial, The Old School Higher Kinnerton Chester CH4 9AJ Easy when you know how… Dear Bus Doctor, I am installing a new headliner into a 1971 VW transporter. When I pull on the headliner to stretch it out, the rod wants to bend the wrong way and comes out of the slots. What am I doing wrong? Patricia the Upholsterer. You need to use a hairdryer on the headlining to make it more supple, especially early in the year when it’s cold outside. It would also help to have a second person to help you pull the headliner as you warm it with a hairdryer so that it will stretch further and prevent you from straining the rods. DO NOT hold the…
