www.volkswagencamper.co.uk Winter is well and truly here, let’s hope the snow some of you had in late November is not a sign of what the season holds in store! Though it does make for pretty pictures – I rediscovered this photo of our first bus in Austria back in 1976 the other day when transferring all my archives. Brighton Breeze marked the end of the show season for us. This year the event celebrated its 21st Birthday, we have done every one and I don’t want to even think about where all those years have gone! But sitting watching all the buses purring in, in a seemingly endless line, and walking up and down the lines of parked buses all along Madeira Drive is still a sight that really gets to me…

a totally wild, custom micro bus

“I worked as a body repairman for 6 years before I began training as a Firefighter. 40 years later and after suffering a major heart attack, I decided not to waste anymore time and I began my search for a bus to restore. I had wanted one for a long time and found a guy in Park City Utah, selling this ‘66, 11 window via a local online classified. The 1600 cc motor had been rebuilt during his ownership, but he’d done very little else. He’d got it from a guy in Idaho, who in turn had bought it from a college student, also in Idaho. “It didn’t look bad and it ran fine. At some point it had been re-painted cream on the bottom with a dark brown top. I…

behind the scenes: behind the scenes: irv’s vw restorations

Mention Barrow-in-Furness and you might think of ship and submarine building. Nowadays though, the Cumbrian town is best known in Volkswagen circles at least, for its status as home to Irv’s VW Restorations. What? You’ve not heard of Irv, purveyor of top quality restorations with a cavalcade of show-winning buses to his name! You really haven’t heard of Irv? Not even when it’s well-known that his workshop is where the trade goes! You are about to be enlightened. Arriving at Irv’s well-presented premises, no more than a convenient forty-five minutes on good ‘A’ roads from the M6, junction 36, you are greeted by a neatly parked row of interesting Splits and Bays either waiting attention, or possibly up for sale, as Irv once more reassesses his ever-changing personal collection. Go a…

harry the hi-top!

“I was attending a VW show, proudly driving in my newly converted silver T5.1. The photographer was taking pictures of the splits and bays coming in to the show, but when I drove past in my pride and joy, he just put his camera down and waved me on! Feeling disheartened and rejected, I went out and purchased this ’68 hi-top from Steve Walker at VW Retro in May 2015. “My first impressions when seeing it? I didn’t have a clue, I could see that it needed a bit of work, but Ian Wheeler said it was a good solid bus and a good buy, so I bought it. The exterior was well aged and sun bleached but looked solid. The interior was like a 70’s horror film with dried out, tattered,…

bus doctor

Got a problem or a query? Steve Leatham answers some of your questions… T3 Brake problems Hi Bus Doctor, Greetings from across the pond. I have an ‘83 Westy Vanagon. It has the 1.9 L watercooled gasoline engine. My problem however is with the brakes. The bus has always had a brake squeak that appears intermittently and can go away when I tap the pedal or sometimes it remains for days. It only has this light squeaking when underway and not when the pedal is pressed. The brakes work pretty well, but the pedal firmness can change at times and feel rock hard. I’ve changed out the front callipers and the squeak returned. Now I’ve discovered that the brakes lights won’t turn off when it’s parked. This symptom is also intermittent. So I’ve…
