Especially mementos of badges from events I have been at. I first attended Bad Camberg back in 1995 and it was special to me – the first time I had seen original barndoors close up (yes, we hardly saw any back then!) and also my introduction to the weird and wonderful world of SO (special body) models – from ladder trucks to katastrophe wagens and even a cinema bus! Not only did I make lifelong friends from all over the world there, it also led to me writing several books a few years later. Bad Camberg 1995 was a turning point in my obsession with VW…

it’s a family affair

Distinctive Moonraker cubby holes in the rearIn 1978, after losing I its exclusive licence with VW, Devon conversions launched two new models, the Moonraker and the budget MPV Sundowner. A new innovation for these was the optional Devon Double Top side hinged elevating roof, which ran the full length of the van with two single or one double berth. The Moonraker featured here was built in March 1979, originally finished in Pastel White. Graeme recalls, “I was three years old when my parents got this bus, and they had had one before it, so I’ve always been around them! Though now in need of a lot of work, selling it was never an option and when we moved house in 1996, it sat on the drive whilst we pondered its…

Stanford Hall5th MayIt’s hard to believe but Stanford Hall VW Show is now in its 43rd year Over those years it has grown from basically a vintage and air-cooled show, into something that embraces the whole VW scene with the biggest range of judged Concours classes of any show. No live bands, no funfair, no fancy dress party, just oodles of classic VWs to drool over and a huge trade area that still has autojumble to sift through where you can still unearth NOS and hard to track down items! Whilst the show is a one day affair, pre-booked camping is available on the Saturday evening (£22 per adult for camping and show entry) and this year there is the option of also staying on Sunday night for an additional…

New cloth headliningUS spec bumpers and red rear lensesThe cab remains essentially stock; however a stainless steel steering column, CSP shifter and classic wood rim steering wheel add custom touchesHe did not set out to buy a Split, he was in fact looking for a Type 4 engine to rebuild, when this one popped up on eBay for sale from Volks Weld in Redruth. Built as a RHD Dove Blue Kombi in 1966, it had been exported to Indonesia with Heavy Duty shocks (M069), 6 pop out windows (M114), larger oil bath air filter (M156), walkthrough cab (M183) and asymmetric headlights for left hand traffic (M196). The bus was basically very solid requiring little welding etc but at some point had been repainted in red and black. Scott loves a…
