welcome

I love the way unstaged period photographs capture and preserve a moment in time, as in this month’s Welcome image taken at the Wolfsburg factory gates in 1951. I’m unsure if it’s the end of a shift, or a convoy heading off to showcase or even road test the vehicles, but just check out that line of new bugs and barndoor buses. I just love the little incidental details – the guy in the foreground’s leather flying helmet, jacket and briefcase, the children watching intently, or the gateman’s bike casually propped by the office door. Custom styling is a recurrent theme across our features buses this month, from combining classic stock looks and subtle modern upgrades to something a bit more radical, as in our T5 Swamper with its Raptor Bed…

Graham Gunn’s first journey back in 2006 in his newly acquired crossover Bay was lengthy and it was soon to be the story of his Bus’s existence. You see ‘Celia’ (check out her registration for clues regarding the choice of name), originally registered in Bournemouth and later resident near Barnstaple, was on her way to Thurso, some 725 miles further north. And let’s be honest, everywhere is a long way from Thurso … except John O’ Groats! For example, the nearest VW gathering is Volksfling at Biggar (290 miles), while a holiday in the Lake District (where we met for the photo-shoot) a cool 400 miles. The Microbus Danbury, or at least with the residue of the conversion installed by the Essex company, was finished in Niagara Blue under Pastel White,…

Steve Leatham answers some of your questions… Steve Leatham has been working on and restoring VW buses since 1997, tackling just about every job over the years. He has been resident Bus Doctor for the mag since 2003. Bay Bias Valve Dear Bus Doctor, Having not driven my bus for about 3 years, getting used to the vagueness of an old air-cooled is quite something owning a T4 and a new Golf. One thing which has bugged me for a long while is the performance of the brake system. When rebuilding my bus just over a decade ago I looked at the system and realised there is a bias valve at the front that essentially works on the angle of the bus. Here lies the problem! My bus is lowered about 6” at the front,…

Sticker Bombed Bay Hi David, Flicking through the latest issue of Camper and Commercial I noticed an orange ‘sticker bombed’ early Bay High top pictured in a show report. It was great to see it as it’s owned by my partner’s parents, Steve and Rachel Burgess! The bus is a 73 factory high roofer called Lyle and he’s been owned by them for the last 14 years. Contrary to sensible advice they bought Lyle the Pile sight unseen in an eBay bidding war and driving it home from Manchester was hair raising, the petrol gauge didn’t work and the engine cut out every time it got below 10mph. Back home their local VW specialist was absolutely horrified - rust and filler everywhere and the front step had been padded with newspaper and…
