www.volkswagencamper.co.uk To the new normal. With some easing of lockdown restrictions, “camping is back on the menu boys and girls”. The first gathering of 2020 was in July when air cooled VWs came together for the Aircooled Campout (read more about it inside) – it was a back to basics, no frills affair, with strictly limited numbers having to pre-book and all the social distance / safety guidelines in place. No live bands, beer tent, funfair, traders, but back to how many events used to be years ago … VWs camping in a field. One of the things many of us are learning / rediscovering from this pandemic is the pleasure simple things like camping close to nature under the stars and being able to relax with old and new friends…

The Wyatt family, of Saratoga Springs, Utah, stable of VWs currently includes a ’59 seamed-gate Double Cab, ’63 ‘TikiBug’, and a ’71 Westfalia (their very first VW), but the time had come for Patrisha to have one to call her very own. “My husband Scott has owned and loved VWs for years, and he pulled me in. I wanted a shared interest, so we built a bus for me!” This 1966 21 Window Deluxe Sunroof walk-through was purchased from friend Cecil Read in Highland, Utah. It was a great candidate for restoration, already in primer and essentially prepped for painting. Even with the great starting point, it would take over two years for this knockout restoration to fully come together. With the attention to detail you will learn about here, it’s…

This 1968 Double Door Panel Van (215) was ordered by the Deluxe Dry Cleaning and Laundry firm in New Orleans, Louisiana. Finished in Neptune Blue, as it was a US export model it featured bumper over-riders and side reflectors. The company had it signwritten to advertise its cleaning and alteration services; interestingly one of the speciality services advertised was laundering of fatigues, making the most of the local Military Base customers! The bus saw service with Deluxe Dry Cleaning until the early 80s, when an employee reversed it into a post and bashed the back corner and it was retired as not worth fixing up. It then sat for over twenty years in the laundry owner’s back garden until a VW enthusiast Denny Pittman got to hear about it. The conversation…

Rust Bubbles Dear Bus Doctor, I have a good-looking 72 Bus that now has 3 areas where a bubble has popped up. I’m guessing that to repair them will cost a fortune and the rest looks fine. Do you know if anybody else used stickers e.g. the bullet holes to cover up? It was new tin and new paint 10 years ago. Billy Mainwaring • If they are small, rub down and rust proof before they get bigger and become a hole. Touch up and covering with a sticker sounds like a good option, or go for the spotty look! But make sure you treat it or it will bubble up again under the sticker causing it to raise. Oil Pump Removal Dear Bus Doctor, I’m stripping down my engine on my late bay, and…

Waxing Lyrical Hi David People have been doing all sorts of things during lockdown but I guess poetry is not a top ten choice! It’s one of a number of nostalgia pieces I’ve been writing and not just about my specific bus as such, more about bringing to life some places and memories we couldn’t travel to any more in it - a lock-down sight-seeing tour in other words. Very much a case of need to get out more. Keith Bolton On Finding an Old American VW Camper Back in the day, and over there,a generation journeyed with you;but, fifty years on and now over here, tbh you’re a bit out of place: soft-edge, not cutting-edge,out of time in our new, sharpened.com world. Frankly, a bit analogue, too, for want of a better word, undriven. But, turning on…
