VW Bus T4&5+ No. 83

This is the only magazine dedicated to the late model VW buses from the T4 and T5 on. The magazine acknowledges the evolution of the VW bus and spotlights where this symbol of freedom and adventure has now arrived: the T4 and T5 - taking their rightful place in the family of VW models and carrying on the tradition of quality and innovation that is the ever iconic VW Bus.

In some ways this issue could be called the Andrew Thompson sunset edition. This month we have three T4s all shot by Andrew at around the time that the sun goes down and we couldn’t resist putting them all in one issue. The three T4s comprise Mike Rachelles example in Tornado red, Ant Leach’s in Friesan green and Shane Phillips’ in Magnetic grey. They’re all campers, all self-built and all entirely different. We didn’t want to upset our other regular freelancers, so we’ve included a Simon Cooke shoot of Kevin Davies’ Reflex silver T5 with a wild Tiki themed interior, a Steve Edwards shoot of Graham Smith, from Camper Revampers, Olympian blue T5. It’s his own van but it has been influenced by his customers’ input and an Anne Rogers…

Groundbreaking Roof Camping with a clear conscience At the recent Camper Mart Stephen Enright, the man with the fertile brain behind Peak Camper van training, the company that trains private individuals and conversion company employees alike in the fine art of campervan conversion, told us of a new project and soon to be a new and innovative product. Called Steeley’s pop-top, it’s a pop-top roof that has been developed out of his frustration at what is currently available on the market. At present convertors, after cutting out what in most cases is the best panel on a van, throw it away. The roof is recyclable and as he says, “it seems madness to throw it away and replace it with a material which is inferior, heavier and in most cases requires colour…

family adventures

This is not the first T4 that Mike Rachelle and his fiancée Rhea have owned. They first bought a short wheelbase version, but soon decided that they needed more space for their son Riley and their dog, Mylo. Or at least that was Mike’s excuse, as it turns out that longer version of the van is also perfect for getting his motocross bike in too, or is that just a lucky coincidence? You be the judge… Their first T4 was used extensively to transport the couple’s two hunting birds, a Harris Hawk and a Red-Tailed Buzzard, and their toy at the time, a speedboat. The boat was traded in when Mike felt the urge to get some road going power and replaced it with a Triumph Daytona. The van was…

Some say biggest is best, and I’m 6ft 4, so I should know, but until last year I’d never experienced Busfest dubbed the UK’s biggest VW show. Following my experience of last year’s Busfest, the 25th edition of the show by the way, I can confirm that it is big… massive in fact. The 3-day event based at the Malvern Showground is obviously well established in the VW scene, but for various reasons, I’ve not made it to any of the previous shows. Being at a permanent show ground means they are used to dealing with crowds and also have a lot of the show infrastructure already in place - which must save the team a lot of time and effort. There were loads of camping options available, even a dog-free…
