visionary thinking

(MARC BOW / VOLVO OCEAN RACE) It’s been a month of big announcements – from the much-anticipated reveal of the Protocol for the 36th America’s Cup by Emirates Team New Zealand, to the shock resignation of Volvo Ocean Race CEO, Mark Turner. Whilst one caused great excitement, the other great disappointment, both have caused plenty of reaction from across the sailing community. The majority of the sailing public – 82 per cent, the Kiwis claim – were in favour of the Cup’s return to monohulls, so that decision has been generally well received. Is this a step forwards or a return to the past? Hard to judge until more details about exactly what the new boats will look like are revealed, but a core element of the Protocol is the…

vendée 2020

Four Vendee2020Vision sailors have set a new Length of Britain record. The crew – Mikey Ferguson, Lizzy Foreman, Andrew Baker and Jack Trigger – sailed from Land’s End to John o’Groats in 2 days, 14 hours and 6 minutes, shaving 21 hours from the record. The previous record, set by Jersey-born offshore sailor Phil Sharp, was 3 days, 11 hours, 52 minutes, 15 seconds at an average speed of 7.39 knots – a record he set back in 2015.The four young Brits sailed the course on board the Open 60 Artemis Ocean Racing and is the second record now held by the British team who, in 2014, took the record for monohulls under 60ft round Britain and Ireland. It was not an easy ride, however with a number of problems forcing…

shock as turner resigns

Much was expected of Mark Turner when he took up the post of Volvo Ocean Race CEO, just 16 months ago. This was the man who was behind Ellen MacArthur’s Vendee campaign, then Jules Verne record and who had created a successful Extreme Sailing Series. So it was a significant shock when, in September of this year, the announcement came that he would be stepping down.Announcements about the future of the race had come thick and fast during his tenure and in true Turner style had been radical and broad reaching. But it seems, perhaps too radical and broad reaching for those in charge of the purse strings. His plans for a foiler and a two-year cycle have not been binned – though another edition of the race in…

ac announcement

The new Protocol for the 36th America’s Cup was revealed on Friday 29 September by Defender, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Challenger of Record, Circolo della Vela Sicilia.Though the document and announcement where light on detail (see our analysis on page 18), some teams are already taking steps to challenge for the Cup in 2021.With the change to monuhulls there are questions surrounding just how many and which challengers might step forward. Alinghi – who have not competed since losing the cup to Oracle in 2010 – announced they are looking at the event again but are waiting on the new class specifics - to be released in March of 2018.Britain’s entry into the 35th America’s Cup, Land Rover BAR, headed up by Ben Ainslie immediately announced their…
