Compiling the votes for the Songs Of The Decade this month, we tasked contributors with some simple rules. They could only pick their one stand-out song of the 2010s. Then they could nominate two or three back-ups in case we ended up with a hundred votes for Baby Shark. In the end, overwhelmingly the most voted-for song was Video Games by Lana Del Rey. I then awarded myself with the prize of going to tell her this news in Los Angeles, even though I think she’s also contributed several other contenders on her latest album, Norman Fucking Rockwell. You can read her reaction on page 38. Obviously, choosing a favourite song of the decade is silly. Music is not a competition. And how do you boil an entire decade down into…

manic street preachers’ divine inspiration

“The band have stated that this was the last time they were going to play the album, so this is the only record now of The Holy Bible live.”Kieran Evans, director To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Manic Street Preachers’ stark 1994 masterpiece The Holy Bible, a series of screenings of director Kieran Evans’s Be Pure. Be Vigilant. Behave concert film will take place across the UK next month. Each screening will feature a different special guest in conversation with Evans about the album’s impact and enduring legacy. Filmed across four nights in 2014 as the band toured the album in full, Evans took a radical approach to the source material – devoting each night to filming just one band member with a small handheld camera, then focusing closely on one…

craig david

“I like getting up early – I love seizing the day.” Hi, Craig. Where are you right now? I’m currently in the car on my way down to Southampton. We’re going over to Southampton F.C.’s training ground, then I’ve got a show later at St Mary’s stadium. When you’re back in town, who’s the bigger deal, you or Matt Le Tissier? I remember getting his autograph many times as a kid going to The Dell, their old ground. Then when you later meet him and he’s wanting to come to the show with his daughter, it’s incredible. Were you a big autograph-hunter then? I would always queue up for them at games. I got Alan Shearer, Le Tissier, Tim Flowers, all of the Saints team again and again, but I’d always get really excited if someone…

sudan archives

“I found all these crazy-ass fiddles and instruments on YouTube. That inspired me to make music the way I do.” Get This Track: Confessions For Fans Of: FKA twigs, Tune-Yards, Erykah Badu It may be midday but it’s the tail-end of a long night for Sudan Archives. Once known as Brittney Parks, the violinist and vocalist is now called Sudan by everyone including her mum. She’s just flown into London from LA. “Me and my boyfriend had our first business idea,” she says of the journey, grills glistening. “We’re going to put the first strip club in an airport.” Sudan Archives isn’t short of unconventional ideas. The 25-year-old reimagines the fiddle as something between a traditional classical instrument, percussion and a record scratch, fusing it with electronics and African rhythms. Having taken to the…

the tunes on repeat in the q office this month.

THE BIG MOON YOUR LIGHT The second taste of The Big Moon’s forthcoming second album is another shift away from the grungy guitar pop of their Mercury-nominated debut. Your Light is sleek, driving synth-rock that sacrifices none of the four-piece’s melodic joie de vivre. Out: now, on Fiction. DESERT SESSIONS NOSES IN ROSES FOREVER Even when he takes a back seat on certain songs, Josh Homme’s presence looms large on the new Desert Sessions record. The best tracks are where he takes full control, like on the grizzled blues-rock of Noses In Roses Forever. Out: 25 October, on Matador. LANA DEL REY HOPE IS A DANGEROUS THING FOR A WOMAN LIKE ME TO HAVE – BUT I HAVE IT Released as a single in January, this piano ballad takes on new resonance as the closer of Norman…

beck takes a cosmic trip

Beck Hansen’s 14th album could hardly have got underway in more auspicious circumstances. It was summer 2013, and a plan to record with Pharrell Williams first hatched some 15 years ago finally started coming to fruition one memorable afternoon in Miami. “The first day I went to go hang out with him,” Beck recalls, down the line from his home in Los Angeles, “he played me Happy, which he had just finished that day, and it felt like, ‘Wow, there’s something exciting going on here!’ After that, we messed around a bit, and mixed a bunch of sounds together. At one point, Kendrick Lamar walked in, while I was doing a guitar solo. It was a special time!” After those sessions, however, they went their separate ways – Hansen to complete his…
