Looking through the many houses we feature on the pages of Real Homes, I’m always inspired by the creativity, passion and, quite frankly, sheer determination demonstrated by the homeowners to transform their properties into the type of space they’d always dreamed of. There aren’t many of us blessed with the kind of budget needed to snap up the ‘perfect’ house that magically appears on a Rightmove search when you increase your top price bracket by an extra £100,000 – hands up if you’re guilty of that little trick! So opting for the ugly (but affordable) duckling on the street as a renovation project, or perhaps redesigning and extending the property we already live in to work better for family life, can be a more feasible way to achieve our ideal home. That’s…

shopping secrets from a home stylist

QUICKEST WAY TO REFRESH A ROOM FOR SUMMER ... Bring the outside in. Use large, green houseplants or indoor trees. Even if we’re experiencing a typically ‘British’ summer, it will still feel tropical inside. MY BEST STYLING SECRET… Start with what you’ve got. Clear all cushions and accessories off shelves and sofas. Get rid of anything you no longer love or is beyond repair, then reposition the rest. It’ll feel like you’ve got a new look without spending a penny. ONE TO WATCH FOR 2019... Instagram is great for spotting new stores, especially online ones. I recently noticed Houseof.com who have launched a sculptural and colourful range of lights. I predict great things! MY FAVOURITE SHOPS ARE... Hortus in Blackheath (hortuslondon.com). Essentially a garden shop, it also sells really considered gifts. WA Green (wagreen.co.uk). stocks witty, clever…

when I started posting on Instagram two years ago. Back then my decorating approach generally involved on-the-spot decisions, a quick trip to B&Q and some very slapdash paintbrush action. I’m not an interior designer and for me, the idea felt simply out of my league. I was quite happy pinning away on Pinterest, endlessly falling down a rabbit hole of inspiration. You sit down for 10 minutes to have a quick browse for living room ideas and before you know it, two hours have elapsed, you’ve styled a dining table, pinned your summer wardrobe and have an entire board of new looks for your hairdresser. ‘MY NINE YEAR OLD HAD STRONG IDEAS ABOUT HOW HE WANTED HIS ROOM DECORATED. I COULD BARELY BREATHE WITH THE STRESS OF IT’ Before Pinterest, I was…
