hello and happy new year!

In this issue, we are delighted to welcome Chris Welch back to the Rhythm fold. As a journalist on the Melody Maker in the ‘60s and ’70s, Chris witnessed first-hand the explosion of Britain’s greatest rock bands – such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, The Rolling Stones, Genesis and Pink Floyd – onto the world stage; sharing and reporting on those incredible journeys with the musicians making their mark. “Going out and seeing all those bands and writing about the new stars was the best job in the world!” Chris enthuses. “The London scene was buzzing at that time, and it was such a privilege to be part of it.” As a drummer himself, Chris always had a particular affinity for his fellow beatmakers and in this issue he pays…

brave new world

When Rhythm was invited to the British Drum Co. headquarters for a top secret announcement, the glint in the eyes of the BDC team told us it was something big. Before the official announcement party heralding Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain as the BDC’s latest signing (held fittingly at the home of Trooper beer, Robinsons Brewery) we had a sit down with the man of the hour and got the low-down on his switch from Sonor. Brimming with enthusiasm for his new partnership with the Manchester-based company, the Iron Maiden sticksman tells us, “I’m very, very excited to have come to BDC. I have committed to this wonderful family and they’ve embraced me, as I have them.” For a relatively new drum company (formed in 2015), British Drum Co. is already making sizeable…

hit like a girl is back

The massive drumming talent search for female drummers, percussionists and beatmakers opens for entries on Monday 2nd March. Stickswomen have until Sunday 12th April to put themselves into the frame to take the coveted titles and bag themselves a treasure trove of prizes. To enter, players must enter a performance video of themselves during that time window above. From there, weekly winners will be selected by judges from the Sabian Education Network. The next step will be to impress the public in an online vote, before then moving on to the final round, which will be judged by a team of all-star judges. Said judges include the likes of Jojo Mayer and Andrew Marshall (working with Billie Eilish, see the feature on page 52). As you can see, to win you…
