tell me your color story

LAST DECEMBER, I DECIDED TO TAKE on a little Instagram challenge. I called it Let There Be Lights, and the challenge (for me) was to post an image of light on my feed every day. I invited the extended Shape family to join in or follow along, and it turned out to be a blast. Recently, I scrolled back through my pics, which triggered lots of memories: Where I took the photo (or, in some cases, who gave me the photo, because the entire amazing Shape team participated), the main events of that day, my mood. (I’m so glad I didn’t post stories, because they all would have disappeared!) The peek into the recent past was actually a surprise benefit to the original purpose behind the challenge, which was to…

the path to fitness glory

YOU CAN NAVIGATE THE OBSTACLES threatening to derail your workout even without having unyielding willpower, a new study from the University of California, Berkeley suggests. Researchers found that when people thought a few steps ahead about the repercussions of giving in to an immediate temptation, they made smarter choices than when they thought in either-or terms (do it versus don’t do it). Why? “Imagining the consequences of acting on impulses can change the impulses themselves,” says study author Adrianna Jenkins, Ph.D. In other words, once we imagine ourselves waking up sluggish after a late-night binge watch—which means skipping a.m. Spin class, which means throwing off that gym habit—the couch itself begins to look less tempting.…

You’re beaming The 72 red LED lights in Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLite EyeCare Pro ($159, sephora.com) kick-start your skin’s collagen production to soften fine lines around and between your eyes so you look smooth and refreshed. Once a day, slip it in place with the attached strap, turn it on (it’s totally painless!), and relax for three minutes. You can expect optimal brightening—and selfies—in six to eight weeks. A better blender Sponges can soak up too much of your product, but the MakeupDrop+ ($20, makeup drop.com) is made from silicone, which won’t absorb your fab formula as you spread it on. And once you’ve got your flawless finish, it’s a snap to clean with soap and water so no breakout-causing bacteria clings. Smooth move. Have a spritzer When the holidays get a bit too-too, take…

Start a mango habit People who ate one and a half large mangoes every day had better blood sugar control, higher circulating levels of anti-inflammatory compounds, and drops in their blood pressure, a study at Texas A&M University found. Other research at Oklahoma State University discovered that a mango shake with breakfast helped offset the negative effects of a fatty meal. The tropical fruit is high in fiber and vitamin C, plus your gut microbiome breaks down its phytochemicals into beneficial elements, says study author Susanne Talcott, Ph.D. Enjoy them in smoothies or simply sliced year-round—one of the six varieties is always in season. CHEERS TO QUICKER THINKING Moderate red wine intake (about a glass a day) may actually help keep your brain sharp as you get older. And new research has discovered…
