my first national could be the thrill of a lifetime

In nearly 30 years covering sports, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to write about some of the biggest sporting events in the country. I’ve reported from NBA and NFL playoff games, college football bowl games, and a college basketball national championship. I’ve been entrenched in an MLB pennant race and enjoyed more college baseball than a man deserves to. I’ve covered 23 Daytona 500s, nearly every big auto race in the country, and one in Japan. I’ve covered golf and tennis tournaments, soccer matches, swim meets, track meets, and races of the two- and four-legged kind. I’ve covered football games on baseball fields, and baseball games on football fields. I even covered a college football game on a racetrack that set a national attendance record. A stick-and-ball guy, I’ve covered events I never envisioned…

The extraordinary sports collection of Dr. Thomas Newman sold for more than $21.5 million in an auction at Memory Lane Inc. that ended July 10. Newman, a Tampa, Fla. neurologist who passed away from complications of COVID in January, owned one of the most extensive and impressive collections in the country, one he assembled over four decades as a sports card and memorabilia collector. Memory Lane officials predicted the Newman Collection would top $20 million. According to Memory Lane, more than 50 of Newman’s historic cards set records during the auction, including some one-of-a-kind cards and memorabilia dating back to the 1880s. Highlighting the auction was a 1933 Goudey #53 Babe Ruth card graded PSA 9, which sold for more than $4.2 million, a record for that card. Newman purchased the card for…

joe pepitone suing baseball hall of fame over historic mickey mantle bat

Former New York Yankee Joe Pepitone is suing the Baseball Hall of Fame for $1 million over ownership of the bat teammate Mickey Mantle used to hit his 500th career home run, according to The Athletic and other news outlets. In a lawsuit filed in federal court, Pepitone claims the bat was on loan to the Hall on condition that it be returned to him whenever requested. "Pepitone unequivocally demanded that the Museum return the Bat on September 1, 2020, as promised,” the lawsuit alleges, according to The Athletic. "The Museum has unreasonably and unlawfully refused Pepitone's demand to return the Bat and continues to possess the Bat without legal cause or justification over Pepitone’s objection." The Baseball Hall of Fame claims the bat was donated by the Yankees in May 1967 and…

ohtani goes wild shohei cards soar as baseball’s newest star becomes hobby hero

The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani was in a neck-and-neck home run race with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. through the end of May, trailing the Blue Jays’ slugger by one (16 to 15). Then … Ohtani went wild, hitting 13 homers in June and three more the first week in July. Suddenly, baseball’s brightest star had 33 home runs — before the All-Star break. (Guerrero fell a little behind, but not much, hitting 28 in that span.) The amazing thing about Ohtani is that he’s been pitching like an ace, too, compiling a 4-1 record with 87 strikeouts in 67 innings. But it’s his hitting that’s lighting up the baseball world. We see the lefty slugger launching Ruthian shots almost every night, it seems. As you’d expect, he’s a hobby hero as well. His prime rookie…
