I’m referring to Tesla’s Autopilot mode, which I had the pleasure of testing out this month. Essentially, you set your distance from the car in front, set a speed, and then the car will take over the driving, using radar to analyse the road. You can even change lanes automatically by hitting the indicator. You’re not supposed to take your hands off the wheel (sorry, Tesla) but I couldn’t help it – can you imagine trying to explain that one to the police? “It’s OK, officer, the car drives itself; I didn’t need to have my hands on the wheel at 70mph.” Driving a semi-autonomous car felt like a real glimpse into the future – but it’s here now.
