A sense of space and place
HAVING SPACE to think is an increasingly difficult thing to do. In fact, that’s probably a bit of an understatement. In the era of the ‘attention economy’, our brains are treated as a finite resource, and the techniques to harvest bits of our interest have become increasingly aggressive and inescapable. Few of us are immune from this; the amount of screen time I spend every day on my smartphone, that ultimate attention-absorber, is too embarrassing to publish here. There are countless reasons why I’m drawn to the outdoors, but I find that one of the most essential things it offers is a regular means of escape from this din of commercial noise, which can be so antithetical to healthy human functioning.
