GERRIT RIETVELD: WEALTH OF SOBRIETY (photography by Arjan Bronkhorst; Lectura Cultura, rrp £66) Exhaustive but in no way exhausting, this lovingly compiled bilingual tome takes us far beyond Rietveld’s groundbreaking house built for Truus Schröder in 1924 in Utrecht and his ‘Red Blue’ chair. A foreword by the architect’s grandchildren reveals that only in the early 1990s did they discover that more than 100 of his houses had been built. This beautifully illustrated homage takes us into the heart of 20 designed and built between 1924 and 1964, and with over 500 pages – largely of photography – it offers an unprecedented opportunity to study the masterful detail that elevated Rietveld’s work.
