Ultimate Adventure Bike November 2018

Our goal in ULTIMATE ADVENTURE BIKE AUSTRALIA is to appreciate everyone that’s having a crack — big or small — and enjoying whatever it is that’s an adventure to you. Hopefully, along the way we can steer you in the right direction (pun kinda intended) and bring to the fore just how much fun and how liberating adventure riding is. The adventure bike scene is one of the most vibrant across the globe and nowhere is it more relevant than in this vast sunburnt country. We were built by adventurers and the need to explore is in our blood. There’s never been a better time to do it on a motorcycle with an amazing array of machines and gear available for all. And now they’re finding freedom once again on bikes that take them back in bush and well beyond, in a less aggressive environment. Now is the time to reach those riders. Readers will be treated to the highest quality photography and journalism with bike tests and bucketlist rides leading the features. Each issue will also have dedicated ride tutorials and handy on track how to’s and will be chockas full of gear and accessories that we know this audience loves.

r 1250 gs revealed

BMW has unveiled the much-speculated-about 2019 R 1250 GS and the big news is the advances in the boxer engine. The latest iteration of the famous family line features a new, 84cc larger engine that produces a claimed additional 11 horsepower (taking it to 136hp) and another 13ft/lbs of torque at 7750rpm. Another highlight of the new engine is the variable valve timing, or BMW ShiftCam Technology, which BMW says “enables variation of the valve timings and valve stroke on the intake side. In addition, the intake camshafts are designed for asynchronous opening of the two intake valves, resulting in enhanced swirl of the fresh, incoming mixture and therefore more effective combustion. Other technical changes to the engine relate to the camshaft drive — now taken care of by a…

ktm 790 adventure r

THE ENGINES WERE THEN PLACED ON DYNOS FOR 25 RUNS OF 150 HOURS IN SIMULATED RIDE PROGRAMS KTM has worked many of its fans into a frothy orange lather since it unveiled its initial prototype 790 Adventure R in 2017. In an era of instant gratification, it’s actually quite refreshing to be forced to wait for something and the 790, along with Yamaha’s Ténéré 700 World Rally, is certainly stirring up some excitement and conversation as the final configurations are debated and teased. In an interesting note, during a press conference on the bike KTM stressed that the engine, which is the one also found in the Duke 790 road bike, underwent an exhaustive testing program that saw 18 Dukes road-tested over 50,000 kilometres each. The engines were then placed on dynos…

harley davidson pan america

DETAILS ARE THIN ON THE GROUND BUT THE 1250CC, DOHC, 60-DEGREE V-TWIN ENGINE IS A GIVEAWAY THAT THE COMPANY IS LOOKING TO TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE MORE PRESTIGIOUS END OF THE MARKET As we write this, Donald Trump is having a press conference with a group of Harley Davidson riders at the White House and basically slamming HD for what he perceives as bad business practices. Astonishingly, he stated that it would be “great” if people boycotted the company after Harley said it may move some production overseas due to the effects of the government’s tariffs on steel. Why do we bring it up? Because it comes hot on the heels of Harley unveiling the Pan America prototype, the company’s first adventure bike, which it plans to release in 2020. Details are…

rally-up your twin

A German company with the somewhat odd name of African Queens has taken to the Honda CRF1000L in an effort to bring the modern rally look to the Africa Twin. While there was a time when world rally was dominated by the big-bore monsters of legend and lore, competitors now ride 450s and the 650 to 1000cc race bike is a thing of the past. Africa Queens are offering the packages that allow you to spec your Honda to look, and in some instances perform, like the modern 450 machines that the likes of Keven Benavides take to Dakar. The type of mods available include rear fuel tanks, a Termignoni exhaust, a navigational tower and Rallye Sport windscreen as well as bigger footpegs, FABA rims, carbon guards and Ohlins suspension. You can…
