welcome…

Made any travel plans for 2020 yet? We’ve been talking to you, other experts, and researching various trends to predict where on earth you may be inspired to visit next year. I hope our annual Travel Hot List (p64) will give you plenty of ideas to really start dreaming. We also feature three of the destinations from last year’s list: I got to visit beautiful Georgia, taking a bunch of lovely readers with me (p96); Simon Broughton went to Colombia to explore incredible San Agustín (p136); while Mark Stratton saw if he could break his tiger curse in India (p46). And knowing that the Arctic features on so many of your Hot Lists we hear from Juliet Rix on remarkable Wrangel Island (p116). If you want to visit Georgia yourself, or join…

Juliet Rix Wrangel Island Journalist Juliet knows how lucky she is to have made several trips to the polar regions. But on p116, she takes us with her – on an expedition to the remote Wrangel island, in hard-to-access Russian territory… What’s hot in 2020? “I’m planning to get some sun! Perhaps I’ll explore the ‘stans, but I want to return to Malta, too, to see its unique temple culture and the buildings that are older than Stonehenge.” Scott Bennett Georgia Although photographer Scott has travelled across the world, he was looking for a destination different than anywhere he had been before – Georgia certainly delivered then, as we can see in his top shots on p96. What’s hot in 2020? “First up is a photo tour to Iceland in February. Usually I travel to escape the Canadian winter,…

your letters

Star letter Up for it in Kyrgyzstan I saw your article on the little-known and quirky country of Kyrgyzstan which mentioned a tour with Regent [issue 194, March 2019], and decided to book the trip with a friend. Wow, it was fantastic. The holiday is not for the five-star hotel brigade, but for more intrepid travellers, with accommodation in homestays, guest houses and yurts. The scenery was glorious, food delicious and we had a great guide and driver with a Toyota Land Cruiser. By the way I am 80 and still up for it! I love your magazine. Anne Vaughan, via email Hoi An adventure After reading about Vietnam in a number of issues of Wanderlust, I finally travelled there. We had visited eleven years ago and decided to return but to different places. We…
