The Gold dazzles! BBC1’s new drama The Gold, based on the infamous Brink’s-Mat robbery of 1983 and starring Hugh Bonneville (right), did well on 12 Feb, with the opening episode pulling in 4m viewers. It beat ITV1’s offering of Vera, which attracted 3.7m. Pile plummets ITV1’s The Family Pile (right) continued its ratings decline with its fourth episode on 7 Feb: just 580,000 tuned in to the comedy about a family dealing with bereavement – less than half its opening audience of 1.2m. It couldn’t match BBC1’s Sort Your Life Out (1.7m).…

Best known for… Melinda earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Jillian Guiler (right), the single mum whose child was abducted by aliens, in Steven Spielberg’s 1978 sci-fi classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Other achievements… She was nominated for a second Oscar for 1981’s Absence of Malice. She also starred in the 1984 film A Christmas Story and 2000’s Magnolia with Tom Cruise and appeared in several TV movies, including 1994’s State of Emergency. She also guest-starred in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2005. Family life… Melinda was 83 when she died on 9 January. She’s survived by her son, Richard Libertini Jr.…

DJANGO Wed, 9pm & 10.05pm, Sky Atlantic Drama Matthias Schoenaerts stars as gun-slinging cowboy Django in a new 10-part series based on the 1960s spaghetti western. The series is set in Texas in 1872, some time after Django’s family was massacred while he was fighting in the Civil War. ‘We encounter a man trying to cope with all the losses he’s suffered,’ says Matthias. ‘He lives with a lot of guilt.’ Redemption for Django comes via a reunion with his long-lost daughter Sarah (Lisa Vicari) in New Babylon, a town she founded with her fiancé John Ellis (Nicholas Pinnock).
