It beat MasterChef: The Professionals on BBC1, which dropped to 2.1m viewers. Western woes New drama The English, which began on 10 Nov on BBC2, struggled to get off to a blazing start, with just 1.6m tuning in to see Emily Blunt (pictured) as a woman out for revenge in the Wild West. Best known for… Bill rocketed to fame thanks to his role as much-loved Arthur Fowler in EastEnders. He appeared in the very first episode in 1985. He remained in the soap until 1996, when Arthur died from a brain haemorrhage. Other achievements… After leaving EastEnders, Bill went on to appear in TV shows such as The Bill and Casualty and films Tale of the Mummy, The Musketeer and George and the Dragon. He’d previously had roles in Who, Sir? Me, Sir?, The Bright Side and Grange Hill. Family life…. Bill died on 5 November, aged 92. He’s survived by wife Katherine, son Jamie and daughter Sophie. His health was said to have been declining for some time.…

THE ENGLISH Thursday, 9pm, BBC2 Drama Clues hinting at what lies behind Lady Cornelia Locke’s dogged determination to avenge her son’s death emerge this week as the action flashes back 15 years to 1875, when her suitor, Thomas Trafford (Tom Hughes), turns up to establish his cattle ranch. David Melmont (Rafe Spall) is his accountant and aide, but why is he so friendly to US rebel soldiers heading to a Native American camp with a massacre on their mind? ‘He commits an atrocity where 100 women, children and defenceless people are murdered,’ says Rafe.
