Strictly dominates A peak of 8.4m tuned in for the first live Strictly Come Dancing show of the new series on BBC1 on 25 Sept. But it was slightly down on last year’s 9m for the same first live show. Best known for… Robert played Howard, the henpecked husband of Pearl Sibshaw, in BBC1’s long-running sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. He starred in the show for 25 years until its final episode in 2010. Other achievements… The Scottish actor’s first role came in 1962 with Dr Finlay’s Casebook and he went on to appear in Coronation Street, Angels, The Onedin Line and Monarch of the Glen. He also appeared in films including The 51st State and Around the World in 80 Days. Family life… Robert died on 15 September, aged 90. His wife, Diana, died a few weeks before him and he’s survived by his three sons.…

RIDLEY ROAD Sunday, 9pm BBC1 Drama Hairdresser Vivien (Agnes O’Casey) plunges into the dangerous world of the far-right National Socialist Movement (NSM) this week as 60s-set drama Ridley Road continues. Determined to find her missing boyfriend, Jack, who’s working undercover for the Jewish resistance organisation the 62 Group, she decides to charm NSM leader Colin Jordan. ‘Colin’s language is abhorrent,’ says Rory Kinnear, who plays him. ‘It’s shocking that only 17 years after World War Two, people are calling for the removal of Jewish people from Britain.’ Vivien realises Colin is training up an anti-Semitic army, so she decides to get closer to him in order to stop him. She and Oscar Isaac play Mira and Jonathan, who’ve been married 10 years but there are cracks in their relationship. Based on the classic Swedish miniseries from 1973, the show starts with the pair interviewed about the apparent success of their marriage by a PhD student before Mira reveals she’s pregnant. ‘What’s so beautiful about this drama is it explores love without possession, without ownership and without expectations,’ says Jessica. ‘There’s something so pure about that kind of love.’…
