Yes, my first port of call for civil birth, marriage and death records is still the GRO, but there are times when ordering a copy from the original source is a useful backup. The fascinating jigsaw puzzle of my family history began with a half-remembered story of 19 Warwick Crescent, Paddington. This was the house of poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. My paternal great grandfather had worked as a valet to the couple, before becoming a chauffeur. I found postcards he’d kept and his driving licence, and with hours of searching I began to build a rich tapestry of information. Before working for the family he had been a chimney sweep, a groom and in the field artillery in the Second Boer War. DNA AND THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY In your August edition you printed a letter from Louise Grove referring to a link between a DNA testing company and a pharmaceutical giant. She wrote that “your DNA is being used for profit” and, personally, I would hope that it is! I am a member of the UK Biobank program. My DNA has been voluntarily given, and it will be compared with my medical records for the rest of my life. This information is made available for the purposes of medical research. It is now commonly recognised that our individual DNA makes us more susceptible to certain diseases, particularly the dreaded incurable ones, and understanding the links will help to advance treatment and find cures.
