wishing you a magical christmas

That moment when I carefully lift my family's Christmas decorations out of the snowy tissue depths of the boxes they've been in all-year long and hang them on the tree, that right there is where Christmas starts for me. For others, it's the sound of Silent Night playing in the malls, or hauling out their handwritten family recipe, passed down from generation to generation, to make their festive pudding. Throughout this issue, people tell us about the quirky and special moments that mark the start of the festive season for them. That time when memories are made and traditions relished. I truly love the warm, kind-to-everyone feeling that abounds right now, the small acts of kindness practised, and the way that people simply feel closer together. It has been an absolute joy…

meet our contributors

We asfied: How do you feel about Christmas? Photographer ANNALIZE NEL shot our festive table settings on page 134. * Best thing about Christmas? The movies – I watch Home Alone every December. * Top Christmas memory? Experiencing an authentic white Christmas in Switzerland a few years ago. * Best Christmas gift ever? Last year my partner gave me tickets to see the Spice Girls live at London’s Wembley Stadium. It’s the best concert I’ve ever been to! * Christmas treat? I love chilled eggnog. Interior designer KELLY ADAMI styled our decor shoot on page 128. * Favourite Christmas food? Is it weird that I love roasted Brussels sprouts? A friend once slow-cooked them with garlic, until they were caramelised – yum! I’ve never been able to recreate them. * Best Christmas memory? My mom, brother and me…

why sofia’s having all the fun

Actress Sofia Vergara, 47, is the first to admit she’s loving her life. Starting out in the Latin film industry 25 years ago, she made a name for herself playing hot TV mom Gloria Pritchett in our favourite mockumentary show, Modern Family. It first aired in 2009 and, this year, the Dunphy-Pritchett clan bid us farewell in their 10th and final season. But Sofia is excited about her future. “Playing Gloria helped launch my career; I know there’ll be other projects for me.” Sofia lives in LA with actor husband Joe Manganiello and has an adult son, Manolo, from her first marriage. I struggled when I first started looking for work in LA – no one could understand me. I went to audition after audition and got nothing. Apparently, there…

ask me anything...

My beauty secrets... Get plenty of sleep, and use every good face cream that works for you – even the technologically advanced stuff. There’s no harm in trying. My favourite healthy snack... Do peanut butter sandwiches count? I make them with wholewheat bread so, to me, that means they’re healthy. My fashion staple... I’m a heels kind of girl. I’ve even been known to wear platforms on the beach! My celebrity crush... Johnny Depp. I’ve loved him ever since he did 21 Jump Street. He’s good looking, but doesn’t act like he knows it.…
