I have loved watching The Crown, and in fact I binge-watched the new series in a record two nights. But what is fact and what is fiction? The first three series were before my time, and in some ways it filled in some of my potted history knowledge – I mean the sequence of events, rather than the narrative. But this latest series saw the beginning of the Princess Diana era, a time that many of us will remember, and has caused quite the royal stir. On p10, our columnist Duncan Larcombe tells us what’s real and what’s made up. I’m glad that’s finally cleared up! Have a great week. If you are staying in and don’t want to miss out on your favourite magazine, remember you can download Woman from the…

what a week!

Saira Khan CALLS IT QUITS Saira Khan has announced she’s stepping down as a Loose Women panellist with immediate effect. Despite starring on the show for five years, the 50-year-old will not be returning to say goodbye to her ITV family, after confessing she has ‘nothing left to share’. Saira told Woman, ‘Sometimes when you’re on a particular show, you get stereotyped. Opportunities don’t come your way because people presume that you’re not available.’ The mum-of-two made the decision following months of reassessing her future during lockdown. On the pandemic, she said, ‘It has made me assess my priorities, values and how I want to move forward with my life.’ The news comes just weeks after Andrea McLean revealed she’d also quit the show. CELEBRITY PET of the week OVER TO YOU! WE ASKED YOU…

‘it’s time to step up’

Princess Eugenie is preparing to take her place in the spotlight following Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s departure from the Royal Family. According to royal expert and Woman’s royal columnist Duncan Larcombe, ‘The departure of Harry and Meghan and the ongoing Prince Andrew scandal has placed further demands on Eugenie and her sister to step up to the plate.’ While initially the Sussexes’ bold decision to step down as senior royals was agreed by the Queen as a one-year agreement in order to assess the ‘period of transition’, it’s looking more and more likely that the couple will not give up their life in America to return to the royal fold. A ROYAL BABY Now she’s expecting, Princess Eugenie is giving the family a much-needed boost this year in the form of…

what’s next for eamonn & ruth?

When it was announced that Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes were to be replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary as the Friday presenting team on This Morning, Ruth’s Loose Women co-host Gloria Hunniford confirmed that even Ruth and Eamonn were shocked and ‘disappointed’ to be sidelined to provide holiday cover only. She said, ‘I think they find it very difficult to understand why the change.’ ‘THEY’VE HAD LOTS OF OFFERS’ However, putting on a united front, Eamonn, 61, and Ruth, 60, shared identical tweets, saying, ‘It’s a changing of the guard on Fridays from January. We hope you make Alison and Dermot as welcome as you’ve made us over the years. Have a Ball you two! It’s not Goodbye from us, it’s simply Au Revoir until the next half term [sic].’ Ruth…

the crown fact or fiction?

FICTION Mountbatten’s stern words Episode one of The Crown sees Lord Mountbatten writing a letter to the Prince of Wales, telling him his actions have brought ‘ruin and disappointment’ on the family and insisting he should settle down. Soon after, Lord Mountbatten is assassinated by the IRA – which is indeed true. However, the rest of the storyline is pure fiction. Peter Morgan, creator of the show, confessed, ‘I made it up in my head.’ FICTION The bedroom intruder Michael Fagan, who broke into Buckingham Palace in 1982, complained the scene in which he and the Queen discussed politics was ‘a complete fiction’. Now 70, he thinks it was made up to have a go at the Queen – though it’s more likely it was to have a go at Thatcher. FICTION Balmoral visits The Royal Family appear…

the mystery of frogmore cottage

Pregnant Princess Eugenie baffled everyone by moving out of Harry and Meghan’s revamped Frogmore Cottage – just six weeks after moving in. Prince Andrew’s youngest and her hubby barely had time to watch the servants unpack before heading home to Kensington Palace for good. Apart from adding to the stress of pregnancy, Jack and Eugenie have turned their backs on what must surely be one of the most spruced-up addresses in the country. Before fleeing to America, Meghan and Harry racked up a £2.5 million bill on home improvements, over and above the £4 million cost of revamping the whole building. Unless Eugenie hates the smell of wet paint, or has an allergy to the Duchess of Sussex’s taste, why would the parents-to-be perform such a U-turn? In the absence of any sort of explanation…
