Go to almost any major event where pro sailors make their living, and female sailors are sorely under-represented. The America’s Cup and SailGP have both made changes to improve women’s participation. SailGP has taken the simplest, and most obvious step: it’s put the women on the boats. The F50s now race with a crew of six, and one is a female sailor. Racing an F50 in close-quarters competition is a unique scenario. The only way to gain the skills for it is by doing it. Just before the SailGP final the British team invited 21-year-old Hattie Rogers, who was competing in the Waszp fleet in San Francisco, to stand in as their female sailor for a training day.
