HOW can we help? What can we do? Where do we go to make a difference? Over and over again we’ve heard ordinary South Africans asking these questions as the devastating effect of Covid-19 is felt in every corner of our beautiful country. Amid the outrage, fear and despair, there are so many shining examples of humanity and this gives me hope we’re going to be okay even though it will be hard by all measures. In our story on page 12 we look at some of the organisations doing their bit to help the most vulnerable people in our society – those who are literally starving to death. Some haven’t eaten for weeks and children are going hungry because their sole meal at a school feeding scheme now doesn’t exist. It’s times…

winning letter

MERRY BAND OF BESTIES EVERYONE in my life knows how I look forward to Fridays to collect my YOU and have me-time on the couch surrounded by my furry friends. I read it from cover to cover, starting with the fashion pages, then working my way from first to last page. This week made me think about who I’d choose to spend lockdown with if we could choose. I love my family but my choice would definitely be my girlfriends. We have a Secret Santa group of six ladies. Every year we have a girls’ pre-Christmas dinner that’s hosted at one of our homes. We also try to get together at least once a month just to catch up. Here’s why I’d love to spend lockdown with these ladies. Maureen is sewing masks for friends…

YAY,MOREPUZZLES! It’s lockdown and – lucky, lucky me – I’ve kept my last eight YOU magazines. Now I can go back and finish all the puzzles I didn’t complete. I’m an 86-year-old pensioner and live for my YOU mag as I’m a puzzle fanatic, my favourite being the codebreakers. It’s kept me going and the days pass by so quickly. It’s not always easy to get my YOU with the lockdown as it’s sold out most of the time. But thanks, YOU, you’ve made lock-down a pleasure instead of a burden. STILL GOT MY YOU, SMS Dear YOU, a huge thank you for the extra crosswords and word search games. Once again you’ve stepped up and thought about your readers. These will certainly stop us from getting bored. PUZZLER, SMS LOCKED UP AND LOVING IT In his…

meghan’s influence

My father was a Coldstream Guard outside Buckingham Palace who went on to fight on royal navy ships in World War 2. He then met and married my mom in Cape Town. Although I’m fiercely South African, my British roots run deep. We grew up listening to countless stories of the royals and over time I’ve developed a soft spot for the British royal family. When poor Diana died it was extremely sad, but she had two beautiful boys, Princes William and Harry. Watching them grow and make sound choices was an absolute pleasure. But then Meghan came onto the scene. Crass and attention-seeking, she cried out for publicity and then wanted to sue the press when they came too close. Harry choosing to leave the royal family is sad indeed. It’s tragic…

in brief

I totally agree with Moore’s winning letter (YOU Say, 30 April). We need to wake up, get up and be thankful for what we have. SATISFIED, SMS Thank you so much, Serene Salie, for your letter about helping others in need during this time of coronavirus (YOU Say, 23 April). I hope it gives many readers food for thought and maybe even some introspection. I’ve been amazed at how many people’s true characters have come out and it’s not a pretty sight. LOOK INSIDE, SMS To the person who stole my shopping bags (some of sentimental value) at Food Lover’s Market in Tokai on Saturday 4 April, shame on you! When I see you shopping with my bags at least I’ll be able to put a face to the dishonest person you are! DISGUSTED, TOKAI I…
