Helpfully a university professor has recently calculated January 20 as being the most depressing day of the year. A combination of poor weather, short days, post-Christmas malaise and unpaid bills can all add up, and when you combine that with the fact that we’re bombarded with news (most of it negative) round the clock, it’s no wonder so many people can feel low at this time of year. But fear not! One thing I love about Yours is that it’s always a safe space – guaranteed free of doom and gloom. We pride ourselves on focusing only on positive, good news stories. If your mood is in need of a little lift turn to page 38 for some quick and simple ways to beat the blues. Or better still, take part in…

the view from yours

Shopping for sleep Items to help aid a good night’s sleep were among the top priorities of shoppers last year, according to Ikea’s annual report. The Swedish retailer revealed sales of sleep aids including blackout curtains and ergonomic pillows boomed in 2019, as did sales of eco-friendly products including reusable water bottles and storage boxes to help organise our homes. EDIBLE COFFEE CUPS A national airline is tackling waste by testing the biscotti cup on customers. After drinking their brew, Air New Zealand passengers can then eat the vanilla flavoured container, just like a normal biscuit. The cups are made from wheat flour, sugar, egg, vanilla essence and natural flavour and are also being used in 14 cafés in the country. But we’re still not quite sure how quickly you’d need to drink it before…

miniature but mighty

Castles might typically conjure up thoughts of sprawling buildings with numerous rooms, extravagant grounds and an imposing façade to keep away the enemy (or at least the riff-raff). But now a special book is determined to show that isn’t always the case. Author and travel writer Dixe Wills has always been fascinated by the miniature and has written books taking in the best diminutive destinations around the globe, from tiny churches to petite stations. Now he’s turned his attention to castles, scouring the length and breadth of the country to find a treasure trove of surprisingly small ones. And by shining a spotlight on these lesser-known little fortresses he’s been able to show that sometimes, some of the tiniest buildings harbour the biggest and best stories and secrets.…

Some animal TV adverts too shocking? ✒ After I’ve finished my household chores I love nothing more than to sit down and watch my favourite TV programmes with a cuppa. But then an unexpected graphic advert appears about abused animals and I’m left running around trying to find the remote to turn over. I do understand that charities need funds but if only they knew how disturbed it makes the viewer feel. Animals are my absolute world but now I keep my remote next to me otherwise I would be in tears all afternoon. They really should have a warning come up before these adverts are shown to say they contain upsetting content. I feel particularly sorry for people who live alone as they could upset them for a long time.…

Solo holiday adventure ✒ Regarding your FitMind50 campaign encouraging readers to try out 50 new things with no time limit, at 72 I took a holiday by myself to the Isle of Wight. I wanted to go for a long time but my husband just wasn’t interested so I booked a coach holiday and off I went. The holiday was great and I met so many very nice people and visited many places of interest. Now I’m aiming to go on more holidays! Liz Jennings, Tyneside The photo I’ll always treasure ✒ I love these photos of Slim Whitman. The one top left was taken at the London Palladium stage door in 1956 on his first visit to the UK. I am second from right next to my friend Ann – we started his…
