SOMETHING I S dawning on us— it’s almost too soon for us to admit, but it’s there, a half-considered thought only now blooming in our brains. Maybe we dismiss it with one of those quick cognitive fly swats. Nah, too early to say or I hate that guy. But the truth is coming, and it sounds like this: Barack Obama will be inducted into the league of Great Presidents. Wait. One of the Greatest? you ask, your thumb emoticon poised to turn up or down on me. The guy haters love to hate with their very best hate game? Like 20-Dollar Bill great? Like Mount Rushmore great? Yep. (We just won’t build Mount Rushmores anymore.) In so many ways, Obama was better than we imagined, better than the body politic deserved, and…

Monkey Lobby: Love Monkeys from Afar In our March issue, cover star Justin Bieber told GQ’s Caity Weaver the tragic saga of his pet monkey, OG Mally, who was detained in Germany. Bieber said he’d like to get another monkey, explaining, “If you could get a monkey, well, you would get a fucking monkey, too!” prompting this response from the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance: “As experts in the field of primate care, we are concerned that this choice will prove dangerous to both you and your monkey, as well as irresponsible when it comes to your public following.… As a public figure, we urge you to use this opportunity to show your fans that the decision to keep a wild animal as a pet was unwise. Please do not repeat this…

the lighter side of shades

Your first official act of summer: Shove your usual blacked-out specs into a drawer, because this season’s all about sunglasses with pale lenses that let you see and be seen. There’s no shortage of frame shapes and sizes, so finding the best-fitting pair for your face (and your look) won’t require much work. Are you ready to see the world through rose- (or ocean-blue-, or subtle-tan-, or Fear and Loathing–yellow-) tinted glasses? STYLIST: KELLY MCCABE FOR ART DEPARTMENT. l.a. is the new capital of fashion

This past February, Hedi Slimane left Paris to throw a concertslash-couture Saint Laurent show in Hollywood. It solidified a movement: This palm-tree-lined city is now a bona fide player in the fashion world. Homegrown designers (like John Elliott) and Caliinfluenced creators (like Greg Lauren) are making all the waves, and new, obsessively assembled shops sell more than just tees and bedazzled denim. The fashion world is doing what every New Yorker secretly dreams of: calling Los Angeles home. Young Man Goes West Why style guru Josh Peskowitz left N.Y.C. to open menswear shop Magasin in Culver City “Galleries have been moving out here, fine artists have gotten a lot of traction, and people who do things like graphic design and web-product design have moved here, too. And those are the sorts of people…

l.a., style central

Stroll Down the Menswear Miracle Mile These two blocks along La Brea Avenue are so jam-packed that they broke our algorithm for Menswear Density (the formula: number of stores × fancy coffee shops ÷ hourly parking rate). Follow this map of the star stores. 1 THE NEW GUY Stampd gets a brandnew black-andwhite flagship shop to match its highcontrast line. 2, 3, 4 THE U CREW In all, these three stores have spent 46 years here, slinging everything from perfected khakis (Unis) to modern staples (Union) to rare sneakers (Undefeated). 5, 6 THE INDIGO NERDS Trading Post piles on the indigo-dyed everything; Self Edge is for geeking out on 18-ounce Japanese denim. 7 THE HYPE HOUSE Drake’s OVO outpost is the only place outside Toronto where you can get the hookup—if you can handle outthe-door lines. 8 THE RETRO EXPLOSION You…

pocketful of green

Where to buy it? Go to /fashiondirectories Sometimes a trend doesn’t have a reason. The unexpected arrival of green wallets—in all sizes and shapes, made by Japanese futurists (Comme des Garçons) and old-school Parisian leathersmiths (Goyard) alike—isn’t some sartorial resurgence caused by a period-piece TV show. There is no lab-grown herd of cows with genetically modified kelly green hides coveted by fashion designers. Steve McQueen didn’t carry one, as far as we know, and that guy apparently did everything that’s ever been cool. Our only explanation for the sudden influx of (and our sudden infatuation with) shamrock-shaded wallets: more green, fewer problems.…
