welcome to the issue

AS THE QUEEN of the longest-running reality TV show, Kim Kardashian West’s made a career out of letting us into her life. But what’s she really like behind the screens? That was the question Grazia’s Paul Flynn set out to answer when he spoke with her a few days after the family’s bombshell announcement that they were ending Keeping Up With The Kardashians. His profile (page 40) is a fascinating read. Despite her global fame, she talks candidly about the challenges of living through a pandemic: Kanye being diagnosed with Covid-19, putting her 40th birthday plans on hold and why she’s still determined to launch her shapewear business in the UK… Enjoy the issue. And look out for our next High Street Issue, on sale 20 October. @hattie_brett / feedback@graziamagazine.co.uk…

over to you...

Thank you for Helena’s account of second child regret. I recently had my first child and find the whole experience overwhelming and underwhelming in precisely the ways she describes, from new mum guilt and anxiety to boredom and loss of self. The pandemic makes it harder for people struggling with mental health to access services. Meanwhile, many new parent activities have been curtailed. I am very grateful for this genuine and brave article. Name withheld UPLIFTING VOICES I have read Grazia since its UK launch and have always loved how you promote inclusivity of marginalised communities, genders and voices. These voices haven’t always been permanent staff writers or editors so, as a WOC, I felt joyous to read that you’ve taken on Stephanie Yeboah and Candice Brathwaite – two of my favourite…

MOTHERHOOD LAID BARE I would like to say a massive thank you for the honesty of Helena Ashon’s article, Things you only know if… you regret having your second child (21 Sept). This awakened familiar feelings of guilt that I’ve spent a long time coming to terms with myself. Unlike Helena, I have made the firm decision that number two wasn’t for me after a traumatic birth, crippling depression and a loss of myself so deep it took a lot of therapy to find myself again. But that doesn’t mean I don’t feel the pressure. I applaud her for her bravery in talking about this and hope it gives women the courage to be honest with themselves and those around them. Thank you for talking about this subject so openly. Kate…

Let sport silence our body demons for good “When Shadow Minister for Sport Alison McGovern wrote a powerful piece for Graziadaily.co.uk on the shame she feels for her size 14 body, it went viral. ‘Something in my head screams, “FAT! YOU ARE SO FAT – WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?”’ she explains of this self-disgust she’s felt since primary school. The MP has found that exercise provides the perfect distraction for her mind while keeping her body healthy, and credits sport – and the Women’s Parliamentary Football team she plays for – with changing her life. As we enter a winter of lockdowns, it’s a valuable lesson we can all learn from – whether we have demons or not.”…

anyone else contemplating a self-imposed news blackout?

IS IT OK TO just not watch the news? To skip The Six ? Stream last night’s Love Island USA instead of gazing with bleary, incredulous, mounting horror, as sleep leaches from you like hope, and one breakfast telly presenter after another fails to get straight answers from Government ministers who clearly have no intention of offering up any truth (assuming, of course, they had any truth to offer)? Is it OK to switch today’s LBC for pre-2020 podcasts (so innocent! So blissfully Covidfree!), Channel 4 News for another cheeky episode of Netflix’s Below Deck , to go to bed at, like, 9.57pm, because you fancy an early night (and by ‘early’, you mean ‘headline-evading’)? I estimate one in three of the people I know and respect (as opposed to people…

1. New in MICHAEL KIWANUKA Not only has he won the Mercury Prize for his general ongoing excellence in the field of haunting melody, but he has the good taste to live near us. Bravo, sir. 2. Non-mover NAOMIE HARRIS Co-starring with Jude Law in The Third Day, which is our new fave telly proposition, besides Below Deck, but which is sort of the exact opposite of it. 3. Up SADE Begetter of one of the greatest signature looks the ’80s had to offer, ground zero on our gold hoop obsession. Releasing This Far, a vinyl box set of her entire oeuvre, imminently. 4. Non-mover LENNY KRAVITZ Because it’s getting on towards being a scarf time of year, and he is synonymous with scarves, but also? Because of his face. 5. Up MEGAN BARTON HANSON Recently revealed she’s never faked an orgasm, an unexpected…
