make eye contact count

SCROLL DOWN @katiejanehughes’ Instagram grid and you’ll quickly learn that she is the master of all things eye make-up. From a smouldering bronze smoke to swirls of pink and every shade of eyeliner in-between, Katie plays with colour and placement in such a fresh and fun way. ‘I’ve always been experimental with eye make-up,’ she tells us, ‘and even more so now that a face mask has become a mainstay in our daily routine.’ Her mantra? Be brave and go bold. ‘A fun pop of colour on the eyes really stands out against a black face mask.’ And if you’re colour shy? ‘Just try it – if you don’t like it, it washes off !’ IT’S ALL IN THE PREP The secret to making your shadow stay put? ‘Make sure you prepare…

how do we bridge the great vaccine divide?

WE NEED TO TALK about the vaccine(s). It’s come to my attention they’re divisive: which at first I thought was bizarre, because, why would the medical response to Our Great Woe be divisive? Yeah. So. Turns out, it’s more complicated than that. Me? I’d roll up my sleeve now , offer my shoulder to the sweet (pointy) approach of that needle – Pfizer’s, Moderna’s or Oxford-AstraZeneca’s, I’m not fussy! – if I could. When I heard about the first, the Pfizer – sitting on my sofa, eating a sandwich, watching the lunchtime news, 1pm or thereabouts, 9 November 2020 – I cried with relief. Then I took myself off, out, to dance in the streets, as (I assumed) everyone would. ‘There’s a vaccine!’ I yelled gaily at the first person I saw. ‘You before me, eh,’…

thought harassment was left in the office? think again

THE INAPPROPRIATE messages from a colleague started arriving in Rebecca’s* inbox a few months after her advertising firm had made the move to working from home. ‘To start with, he was arranging work calls. Then the flirty comments started, like how he looks in Speedos and how pretty I am. I pretended they weren’t happening and didn’t acknowledge them,’ she says. Next he moved over to WhatsApp and started messaging her out of work hours; he already had her number from a project they had previously worked on. ‘He started to comment on how great my body looked. He said we should go for a coffee and told me he wondered what a hug from me would feel like with my boobs. You get the picture.’ Rebecca stopped responding and reported him…

New in GIOVANNI PERNICE AND RANVIR SINGH As of now, it is our sworn ambition to do a dance so sexy, it leads to epic gossip about whether we’re sleeping with our dance partner, which we then laugh off. 3. Non-mover J-LO Outside Saks Fifth Ave’s Christmas display, formally alerting the world to the necessity of matching one’s coat to one’s bag to one’s mask. 4. Down BILL GATES Elon Musk just replaced him as second richest man in the world (after Jeff Bezos), so he’s now only the third richest, which must be awful for him. 5. 2 revealed: your 2020 party dress code

PARTY SEASON 2020 is upon us. And while we might be going out less, our desire to let loose is greater than ever. After all, what bigger cause for celebration than making it through this year (at least partially) intact. One thing that may have fallen by the wayside in the past few months is your sense of style. Limited socialising opportunities have left many of us confused about how to get dressed. And as for the idea of putting on clothes not just to go out, but to go out in? Well… The key to mastering party season this year, whether it involves actually leaving the house or doing it all on screen, is to treat it like the occasion that it is. Dressing up is a joyful act, so treat…
