a life more conscious

It’s strangely uncanny that as I’m writing this editor’s letter for our Sustainability issue, we’ve also just entered Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) here in Singapore. We celebrate World Environment Day on June 5 – let this serve as a reminder to bring our own containers for food takeaways now that we’re unable to dine in at food and beverage outlets. While it’s a small role we can play during these challenging Covid-19 times, we can continuously make an effort to learn how to lead a more sustainable and environmentally conscious lifestyle. Beyond consuming vegan or eco brands and reducing packaging, we talk about having a simpler skincare routine with multitasking items, and the importance of switching to waterless and water-saving products (page 64). My superbly stylish friends Aarika Lee and Jasmine Tuan also…

hw endorses: the “green” bag movement

Fancy a luxury bag made of… mushroom? Hermes introduces a Victoria bag made of fungi-based leather. The fabric, dubbed “Sylvania”, is created from fine mycelium, a biotech polymer derived from the fungi family. While vegan leather is hardly novel, more and more major luxury houses are looking towards such textiles to satiate the growing market of fashion lovers who value sustainability. And when this remarkable fabric is endorsed by a premier leather expert such as Hermes, you know it can only be good. Other eco-conscious bags that have taken off this year mostly use the repurposed, recycled and reused methods – such as Coach (Re)Loved, Prada Re-Nylon, and the bags from Gucci’s Off The Grid collection – but we can’t wait for more innovation sprouting up from the brands we love. The…

stylish, sustainable, and making a real difference

JASMINE TUAN, 42, ZERO-WASTE ACTIVIST & CO-FOUNDER, CLOOP.SG From a compulsive shopper to an ecocrusader and zero-waste activist, Jasmine Tuan’s life took an about turn after a near-death experience. She then wrapped up her fashion business – she was co-founder of the now-defunct label Fru Fru & Tigerlily – and decided to make better choices in life. She says: “I started questioning my purpose in life – am I destined to die a consumer without having done anything for the planet we live in?” A four-year stint in Kuala Lumpur brought her in touch with non-governmental organisation, Zero Waste Malaysia, and enlightened her on the 5Rs of sustainable living: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot. “I used to go straight to recycling, considering myself a very eco-friendly person. But, I realised that there are…

being the change

Content creator Clara Hong used to be a fashion victim. “I used to follow trends all the time. That tie-dye top? Check. Ooh, that zebra print dress? Another check. I didn’t ask if I could see myself wearing this in three years’ time,” admits the 24-year-old. But after watching Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus in The Minimalists on Youtube and listening to them on Spotify, she’s a changed woman. “I ask myself, ‘Is this an impulse buy?’ If the answer is yes, I’ll sleep on it for a couple of days, and I’ll most likely make the purchase only if I’m still thinking about it,” shares Clara. The visual arts graduate now aims to downsize her wardrobe to pieces that she genuinely loves. How? By prioritising quality pieces that tend to…

clara’s five fashion essentials

WHITE TANK BODYSUIT Annibody has the softest bodysuit you will ever own. I literally wear this everywhere, from the beach, to brunch, to a nice dinner spot. It’s so versatile. CLASSIC LBD My favourite is the strappy midi A-line dress from Basis Clothing as it’s so flattering. VERSATILE SNEAKERS I wear the New Balance 990v5 in grey with dresses, pants, skirts – you name it. It’s also great for workouts. CRISP WHITE LINEN SHIRT Linen is one of my favourite fabrics as it’s extremely breathable – a must in Singapore’s hot climate. It also gets brownie points for being sustainable. My favourite, which has a slightly cropped silhouette, is from The Editor’s Market. A BAG THAT HOLDS EVERYTHING My go-to is The Mini Tote Bag from Marc Jacobs. It’s practical yet chic at the same time, and the neutral…

a slice of paradise

Enjoying a cool summer breeze in the Maldives, or walking down Rodeo Drive – those are just some of the destinations that the 2021 version of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 takes us to. Featuring a palm motif inspired by lush tropical forests, the eye-catching face comes in three colours, but retains all the iconic elements of the timepiece. The palm motif dial radiates with vitality, springing to life as light hits the surface. Made from age-old materials such as copper, zinc, nickel, chromium, titanium and silicon, it’s only through cutting-edge technology and the experience of the brand’s artisans that make it possible to create such deep and vibrant metallic colours. The palm motif takes centre stage on three of the new watches, which all come equipped with the new generation calibre…
